IMR-4350 for 45/70 Gov't

What is a good load and bullet type for the 45/50 gov't useing IMR-4350.I'll be shooting this load in the H&R 45/70 gov't barrel on a ultra hunter single shot rifle.These loads will be used mostly for whitetail deer hunting.

Don't know about 4350 from experience, but for my Browning 1886 with 400gr gas checked bullets, of 2495, 5744, RL7, 3031, H322, 4198 and Varget, by a wide margin, Varget was best followed by 3031.  The others were quite a distance behind.  Velocities of about 1600fps are possible while staying within trapdoor pressure ranges.  With a straight case, I believe 4350 to be far too slow and normally would not even think of trying it.  BOL.

I'm not all that enthusiastic about IMR-4350 or H-4350 for the .45-70.

I got my best results, using bullets from 300 grains to 500 grains, with IMR-4198.  Rifle was a Ruger #3.

    Hey ricciardelli what about the IMR-4320 i saw it mentioned on steves page he's got it from 47.0 to 54.0 max with a 300 grain bullet.

With IMR 4350 in the 45-70 you could virtually fill the case to the base of the seated bullet and barely bust 28,000 PSI.  Far better powder choices as demonstrated by the dearth of 45-70 load data with IMR 4350.

I had a long talk with the guy who runs stevespages...

He said that IMR-4198 was the best all around powder in his little Ruger #3 with bullets from 300 grains to 500 grains.  (Just as he posted here...)

However, in the data pages other powders are selected, because when he tested the .45-70 with a longer barreled rifle they proved to be a little better, depending on bullet weight.

Sometimes I really think that guy has a split personality!
