My buttstock cartridge holder is loose!
« on: May 06, 2006, 10:02:23 PM »
It's really late, and I'm tired, and I can't get any results out of the search engine, so I'll just ask. I got my new buttstock cartridge holder for my wooden handi stock yesterday, and the sucker is real loose. It's one of those cheap expandable nylon jobs. Any tips on securing it? If it matters, it's just a pallet stock, so I'm not real particular about it.

my first and last suggestion would be to work on reducing the size of the shell holder and do NOTHING to the stock. Try sewing it together in a lateral line where it runs against the bottom of the stock to make it a bit tighter on the stock, or, buy a smaller one....<><....

You might also try stuffing some dense foam between the cuff and the stock.  This would not only take up the loose cartridge holder, but also give a little cheek pad.  I know some of the guys do this have told of doing this.  More for the cheek pad than for a fix for a loose cartridge cuff, but it would work equally as well for either one.

A.J.,

Is this an elastic slide on or one with a velcro closure at the bottom? Figure out how much it needs to be reduced by in both the front and back, then turn it inside out and sew a line accross the bottom. Turn it back rightside out and slip it over your stock. If it gets to tight to slip over the buttstock try slipping it on from the barrel end. If it is scoped you may have to remove the barrel.

 Like the song, AJ. Remember "Leather and Lace" by Nicks and Buckingham? Make you one of leather and lace it at the bottom and make a strip around the butt to keep it from sliding forward. I have a pic in a previous post on this forum. It's for rimfires but could be adapted for centerfire. Thanks for reading. Hunman55

I haven't had a problem with them being too loose before...just too tight..I use a small piece of Rubatex under mine for the cheek piece..and it works great..You could do the same thing..or take it back to where you got it..and pick up a Uncle Mikes type at Walmart..which is what I used on all of mine..

Here's what I do. After doing the stitching to tighten any excess slop, always remove and replace over the grip end of the stock. I Have found it just easier to remove the buttestock from action. Then position it far enough toward the recoil pad to cover the rear sling stud. Using a very sharp blade, make a small nick in the shell holder for the stud to protrude thru. Replaced rear stud. This holds the shell holder in place.

Cool, Wally! Never thought about letting the rear stud hold the cartridge carrier in place. Too late for the install though. Oh dummy me already stretched it out by installing it from the rear. but I can take up the slack by stitching it...alan

I pur mine on from the rear with no problems.  I do like Wally said and make a small hole at the back bottom of the carrier to go over the swivel stud.  Before you do, put some type of plastic glue or finger nail polish on the edges of the hole so it doesn't ravel.

I've got one of the camo neoprene type, no problems with it being too loose, did like Wallly, anchored it in position with the swivel stud.

I got my Handi out of the safe to do the "Wally" modification, and found the cartridge holder had shrunk back down after it had set awhile. When I pulled it back to put it over the rear stud, it tightened up even more over the thicker part of the stock. Now I'm just going to put a few drops of super glue in different spots to keep the stud hole from tearing out, and keep the whole thing from sliding around, and I'm set!

Sounds good, glad to hear things are working out.

I had a problem several years ago that I had the Handi slung on the side of a pack frame as I bicycled back on a closed logging road.  When I got to the end of the road and got ready to hike up to the high country, I found that all the ammo had fallen out of the holder on the butt and had to peddle back 3 miles or so, looking for shells so I could continue the hunt.  I understand that Uncle Mikes has a buttstock carrier with a flap to prevent this.

Another way to secure it is to stick a safety pin through the shell holder and swivel stud then crimping the tip of the safety pin closed.
