223 WSSM.. NEED HELP
« on: January 23, 2004, 11:36:29 AM »
Hi guys, posted similar on another board but need your help. I am absolutely kicking myself for selling my Rem 700 .223 which i had placed a heavy Hart barrel and jewel trigger on.. Was a really nice gun, and am just sick i got rid of it.  Anyway, looking to build a new one and was looking at the above cartridge and wondering what your thoughts were?  Had shyed from the 22-250 as gunsmith told me for high volume shooting i could expect barrel/throat erosion much quicker than with 223. Assuming the 223 WSSM would burn up even faster than 22-250, but just basing that on logic of it being a hotter round.  Additionally, can you purchase just the receiver of remington 700 or what is the best way to build a gun. Previously, had purchased "whole gun (Rem 700 VSSF)", then replaced barrel and trigger and had lugs lapped and face trued.  Just curious if receiver could be purchased relatively cheap and then add everything on cheaper than buying entire gun route. thanks for help.

223 WSSM.. NEED HELP

broker,

I have a Winchester M70 Coyote in .223 WSSM.  There is NO truth to the RUMOR(?) of the WSSM's being barrel burners or that they burn out the throats quicker.  I have over 700 rounds thru mine and there is NO sign of throat erosion that can be seen with a bore camera.  Measurements taken at the time I bought the rifle compared to now also show no wear.  Of course if you want to live on the edge and really push the velocity envelope then you can burn out ANY barrel, even a mild mannered .22 Hornet won't last.  As far as getting an action and building a custom rifle you should be able to get a action from Winchester or have a Remington action made for the one of the new short action cartridges shortened.  Why go to this expense though when the Winchester action works just fine for these stubby little fire burners.  I like my .223 WSSM, more accurate, out of the box, than any .223 Remington, .22-250 or .220 Swift I ever bought.  Lawdog
