I'm thinking of starting to hunt deer with a muzzleloader. I've never owned one, and I've only shot one once. What do you recommend for a reliable, accurate, easy to use gun that won't set me back too much money? I have hunted with centerfire rifles and shotguns, but I know very little about muzzleloading, so tell me everything you think I should know. Thanks!

Forgot to mention...Massachusetts doesn't allow break-action muzzleloaders, so I need to take that into consideration when choosing a muzzleloader. Thanks.

I am now a really biased person so read this with caution... I have had and still have a bunch of different inline muzzleloaders, but right now i am really sold on the versitility of the White Ultra Mag. It is truly an all-around gun. It can shoot loads heavy big 600 grain conicals and lightweight saboted bullets. It shoots them with great accuracy. It is easy to shoot, easy to load and it is east to clean.

Stainless steel, 26" barrel, all three ignition systems, open breech, laminated or synthetic stock - and it looks good...

Brad-Does that law include "Pivot-action" guns like the Kodiak or Omega? I'm new to this game as well,and have the CVA Kodiak. Very user friendly. Easy access to the breech plug, and easy to clean. My next gun will most likely be the Omega.

I recently purchased a Winchester Apex from Cabelas and am very happy with it. It's a nice looking/handling gun with a 29" barrel. Although I had to send the scope back, it's a very sweet shooting gun with a good trigger. It's got the drop down action like the Kodiak and Omega. Last I seen, they were still on sale at Cabelas for $180. This is over $100 off the regular price. You can get the scope and all together, but don't. I did, and the scope was crap and had to send it back.

The Savage is reliable, accurate.
It is real easy to use because it shoots modern smokeless powder, and you don't have to clean it after you shoot it.
I have one and I like it very much.
Costs about $425.

For someone looking for a new muzzleloader, I would definitely recommend the T/C Omega .50 caliber. Excellent gun, great shooter and VERY easy to clean.

Take a look at the T/C Black Diamond, too. With the Encores and Omegas out there, they are very affordable. Mine came with everything but powder and caps. They are simple to operate and break down easily. They also shoot very well, too.

PS- If you can find one used in good shape, look at it. There is absolutely no resale value on muzzleloaders. Check in you local gunshops.
