Marlin loading gate
« on: May 28, 2006, 03:03:48 AM »
I have a new 1895G 45/70. When loading the magazine, the first round goes in with no problems. After that, pressing the bullet nose down on the loading gate doesn't open it. I had to use the bullet nose to push the cartridge in the magazine forward a bit, then push down on the gate. I have a 336 in 30/30 and an 1894 in 44 Mag, and have never had this problem before. It does bugger up the soft lead noses a bit.
Is this problem caliber specific, or is there something wrong with my loading gate?
Thanks.

Not sure if it's a problem....but my 1895 is about the same way....the rim of the last loaded cartridge is visable through the loading gate and won't allow the loading gate to open until I push the previously loaded round into the magazine a bit while pushing down on the loading gate.

I have same problem so until it loosens up I carry a small piece of plastic rod to push the round it further.  Its working and I think beginning to loosen up.  But its a big round and takes some pushing to get it in.  Just make sure the plastic rod is flat on the push end.

Thanks guys. I feel better about it now that I'm not the only one that noticed. I'm glad there isn't anything wrong with my loading gate. I haven't gotten to shoot it yet and it's driving me crazy. THe only range around here isn't open for another three weeks.

Daddy,

Get yourself some "snap caps". Not only are they good for practice, but you can use them to test functional problems like what you have run into. They come in sets of two so I usually get two sets to check all aspects of funcionality.

:cb2: I'm always amazed when those .45-70 cartridges go through the gate anyway. I just look at that thing, look at the gate, and say, "No way." But it always does. It just looks like it would never fit.

Gate plan

Well something I have seen done is to not load the first shell all the way just keep it halfway and push it in with the next that way there is always one shell holding it open until you are finished.  A simple stategy that should work for you or anyone.

That would work.....I usually try to hold the loading gate down a little and then load the next one.........either way....once I realized what it was doing then I could be prepared for it........

.....and I agree.....It's to big but it still fits! :-D

I had the same problem with the gate on my 336C. I pulled the gate, polished/deburred the backside and reinstalled it.........no more problems.

Be sure to locktite the screw when you put it back together.
