How can you tell if you have the short action or long action. I have one in 257 roberts and was looking at getting a synthetic stock for it.

My Ruger .257 Roberts was made in 1989 and is a long action.

I believe that short actions stop at the 308 class of cartridges which are 51mm long.

CH's 257 Roberts is based on- the 7mm Mauser case which is 55mm long.

The 30-06 case is 63mm long.

Then you get into the magnums.
