Got a saiga now need some help please
« on: May 08, 2006, 11:02:12 AM »
I had a dirt bike for a while and finally decided to get rid of it out of the deal i got a 7.62x39mm saiga with a bushnell scope, light (for coyotes), 50 rounds mostly wolf but some fc im guessing there federal, 2 8rd clips, and one 30rd clip. I live in maine so i got to "edit" one of the 8rds to make it legal for deer. This is my second gun so i dont know anything about semis and not that much about the 7.62x39 round except its similiar to a .223 and a military round. I was hoping someone on this site could help me out a bit. Ive been hearing the round is getting more expensive and harder to find which is freaking me out since i just got it and pretty soon the ammo will be gone not to mention i couldnt find anywheres to get parts for it in case i need some in the future. I emailed european armory hopefully i get a owners manual from them since i dont know how to take one apart. I havent shot it yet since its at my parents place and i probably wont be able to for a week i picked up some targets and a bore snake for it the guy said it should work the size for the snake is .22,.223,5.56mm. Im hoping i didnt make a bad trade i really like the gun and hopefully i wont need parts in the future but then again it has more parts then my 9yr old nef pardner that looks like its brand new. I take care of my pardner alot everytime i shoot it even if its only shot one shell i take it apart and clean everything i try my best to keep it from breaking. Hopefully someone can give me some advice as too where to get some good ammo and parts and maybe some more info on the gun. I will be using the gun for deer and just to shoot targets with i feel my nef may get the back burner when i start shooting the saiga. I hope this gun will last me many yrs. If anyone wants to give me some tips about the gun or anything post away im all ears and want to hear what everyone else thinks of them.

Go to Google, Do a search for surplus ammunition.
You will see several places such as AIM SURPLUS
To order Ammo online (that is if local laws where you live
allow such a shipment to be made to you). If finances allow,
you might want to order a case of it.

The Saiga's are commercial versions of the Kalashnikov action, the AK-47.  They are stronger than rocks and nearly destrcution proof.  Search around through the links S. Sumner gave you for the best ammo prices and go to any AK-47 site you can find for take-down and cleaning instructions.  These rifles are supposed to be rock solid and accurate and should last and last and last.  If the one you got has a sight receiver rail on the side of the action then you will have a good socpe mounting capability if you want it.  HTH.  Mikey.

You should get a 30 cal bore snake and patches (7.62 mm) not the ones for 223! Can you use a semi for deer hunting in Maine?

Yeah on the other site i visit everyday the guy said it was .30 cal i kinda figured it wouldnt be the right one so i havent opened it yet and will take it back.

"If the one you got has a sight receiver rail on the side of the action then you will have a good socpe mounting capability if you want it"

Yes that is exactlly the kind it has.

"Can you use a semi for deer hunting in Maine?"

Only thing u cant use is a automatic or guns that have the "burst" option :) . The smallest caliber u can use is a .22mag everything on up from there u can use thats deer hunting laws i doubt there the same for bear or moose dont know cause i dont try and hunt them. This state is alot better then new jersey as far as gun laws and guns u can hunt with. If ur 18 or older and have a state id or license 5 mins later ur walking out with a gun. 21 for handguns. I will go look up how to take one apart i know it shows u on the online manual but its hard to see.

OK, if this is just like the AKs, the first thing you do to dismantle the rifle is remove the magazine.  Then cock the action and let the bolt go forward.  At the rear of the action is a small squared stud that fits through the receiver cover - press that forward with a screwdriver until it locks inside the receiver then lift the receiver cover up and pull back.  Then remove the recoil spring from the bolt rider.  Then slide the entire bolt mechanism to the rear and up to free it from the rails - it's much easier than it sounds.  The last thing to do is remove the front handgrip - do this by sliding the lever on the rear  sight base down 90 degrees and lift the handgrip from the rear - you mya have to wiggle that lever a bit to allow the stock to lift up - the forestock incorporates the piston that helps cycle the action.  Clean all the parts and replace them in reverse order.  Fsairly easy to do once ya dun it.  HTH.  Mikey.

Thanks mikey. I emailed european armory to get a manual and they said to call them i also checked russian america armory and they sent me a manual i understand now how to take it apart lets hope i can actually do it right. I hope i can get over there in a couple days its like a little kid having a new video game but u cant play it it drives ya nuts  . When i get over there i will clean it then shoot it then clean it again then work on making one of my 8rds legal for hunting (5 rds). Im just going to cut a piece of wood to fit in the mag to make it only accept 5 rds.

Lube it up with moly first.  Go to; www.mcmaster.com  search for moly anti-seize and halfway down the page is the premium blend moly thats the one you want.  I apply it inside the receiver rails, bolt carrier/bolt, recoil spring, on the gas piston and gas tube just a little will do.  And on the trigger sear the saiga is a different gun with just a lube.  It will cycle faster and smoother too and the trigger is awesome too.  Remember to get the perium blend omly its TS-70 moly thats the one you want.

For deer hunting you can use the wolf 154gr sp ammo its very close to the lower side of the 30-30 round in performance and very accurate too. You can checkout www.cabelas.com and www.sportsmansguide.com for all your 7,62x39 needs too.  I like the free plastic ammo can for carrying my ammo to the range and hunting its free and bigger than the 50cal ammo can from cabelas.

Thanks for everyones help. I cleaned it a couple days ago and finally got to shoot it today ( i keep my guns at my parents place since theres no place to shoot around here anyways). I only shot it 4 times but it was fun out of those 4 shots i never hit the target :-D . Either im a bad shot or the scope is off ill mess with the scope when i can get over to my dads cousins farm and take my time with it. It has little recoil and its fun to shoot. Im still not too familiar with semis so i only put one rd in the mag next time i will try 2 then go from there. I made a piece of wood to fit in the mag to only allow 5 rds which should be good for deer hunting. Fun gun i think i will need to buy 500 rds from cabelas there age limit is 18 for buying ammo one other site im not sure what one it was but there age limit was 21 (im 20 till sept) they were both they same price so it dont really matter. Fun fun fun fun cant wait to get over there again whenever i get enough money to get 500 rds i might have to load up the 30rd mag and go to town with it .  Ill have to admit i believe the single shot nef pardner is going to get the back burner now i will take it out from time to time but the saiga is the gun im grabbing first from now on. Now i just need to learn how to judge distance so i dont over shoot or under shoot. Once again thanks for everyones help .

It might be shooting low, i noticed mine shot low with the ammo i was using but its not hard to adjust just crank the front site down that will bring your POA up.  I would shoot shoter distances to sight it in and move it farther back as you go and readjust it.  Just make sure its shooting low first.

Yeah thats what i was going to do because i would most likely be wasting ammo if it didnt hit the target in the first three shots. I should of asked the guy what he had the scope sighted in for. Will probably end up buying a bore sight later on down the road or just use the open sights.
