Finally broke down and bought a Survivor
« on: May 15, 2006, 08:02:10 AM »
After looking a the Survivor for the past month, my cousin and I finally broke down and bought one each. We each picked the .223 since we both have .308's already. Here is a picture of mine:

I put a Rock mount bipod, and a Barska 6.5x20x50mm AO on it. I have to admit that the scope is very nice for the low price I paid. This is my first .223 to shoot much less own, and I am in love with this caliber. I have been shooting Winchester 50gr ballastic tips since that is what I will be shooting at varmints with. This weekend we are going to take a trip to the closest 200yd shooting range, and see what the rifle can do. I do have one question, my cousin has a older NEF .243 that eject's the shell when you break open the barrel. On these Survivor's it just has an extractor. Is there a reason for this? Can I get an ejector for the barrel? It is hard to get the casing's out when you are wearing gloves.

Welcome aboard, jdr!! :D  Extractor barrels can't be converted to ejectors, but ejectors can be converted to extractors. H&R switched to extractors to eliminate ejection problems and to prevent injury from the ejected brass, there's no going back from what they tell us.

Read the FAQ and Help sticky info, lots of info in there that will answer most of your questions that you have now or will have after you shoot the new survivor.

:D , Welcome aboard jdr, very happy to have yopu here with this group of Handiholics. I am sure you and your cousin, as myself and many others here, will find your H&R .223 a fine shooting gun. As to the extractor instead of an ejector ( :( ) Quick is correct, all new H&R's/NEF guns, except rimfires possibly, are now coming with extractors. The company is going backwards on this, they are however saving money by fitting the much cheaper extractors. This is a perfect example of the old adage, "be careful of what you wish for, for you might get it!!". Many here who either overloaded thier reloads, filed to properly resize or neck size thier cases, or just kept a dirty chamber complained so much about stuck cases that H&R finally caved in (seeing the $ saved in doing so also I would suspect) and they are now fitting the cheaper
extractors only, in answer to those few but loudly complaining misguided people. If you want an ejector barrel, as I and many others prefer, I suggest you keep your eyes open for a used ejector fitted one, then sell off your newer extractor barrel to someone who wants it. I have predicted, and still contend, that in the future ejector fitted H&R/NEF barrels will command a premium on the used barrel/gun market, especially for hunters. Have fun, shoot straight, and stay safe....<><....

Same here jdr, welcome to the forum. Stay and enjoy :toast:
I'm sure you will be well pleased with the 223. These are excellent shooting barrels, and among the more accurate of the caliber offered. Just a word of advise if I may...get yourself some metal polish paste and polish that bore!
It took mine many MANY rounds before I got it to perform to my liking, and it will save you some cash on ammo. And it will only help, no harm done. Looking forward to hearing how she shoots for you.

I am pleased with the rifle overall. However, I am not confident enough in the rifle yet. My cousin and I shot over 250 rounds this weekend, not each, but together. I don't know if its the ammo we were trying but it would group sometimes, but it would also throw fliers. We were sighting in at 40yds, just to see the groupings. Towards the end of shooting it was starting to were we were happy with the guns. I am going to try some different ammo. We were using the Remington 55gr, from Wallyworld for $5 something a box, and also trying some of the Winchester 50gr Ballastic tips. I am going to try some of the WWB 45gr JHP this weekend. I think alot of it had to do with the trigger, and the tons of energy drinks we were downing this weekend.  We are going to call the local gunsmith and see if he can drop the pull on the trigger down this week.  What is the Metal polish paste you are talking about? Also on forend of the survivor being plastic, can you bed where the forend and barrel are met together? Would that help any? I am not wanting a benchrest rifle, but i do want 1"-2" groups at 100yds.

Nice looking rig and welcome  :D
I really like my .223 ultra. I free floated my barrel and worked up some loads she likes. All I can say is she is a keeper. Good caliber choice and good luck.
