Ever seen a 30-30 pump?
« on: February 20, 2006, 04:51:22 PM »
Years ago, my uncle bought a nice short, compact, and very sweet 30-30 pump. It shot as good or better than any lever action I've ever seen. This was the only pump action 30-30 that either of us has ever seen, and he says that he's pretty sure it was a Mossburg(spelling?).

I'm just curious if anybody here has one, had one, or knows if they're still floating around?

Jerry,

I have a Savage model 170 in 30-30.  I bought it new in 1983 for $115.  It was my first deer hunting rifle.  I killed five buck in PA with it before moving on to what I thought were bigger and better rifles and calibers.  The little gun has an 18 inch barrel and a tubular magazine which holds three rounds.  It always shot well but has not been out of the safe for a walk in the woods for many years.  I am saving it as a first deer gun for my four year old son.

Overall, it is a neat little gun. :-)

i have a Savage Md 170 in .30-30.  i love it.  it is one of my favorite deer rifles, and spends quite a bit of time with me when i am in the deer woods.  to me, the pump action is quicker and more natural than a lever, althought i love my lever guns as well.  i wouldnt take nothing for my .30-30...

I found a 170 Savage online on another forum, and bought it.  I have been very impressed with the accuracy of this rifle in 30-30.  Currently, I have a Redfield 2X7 variable scope mounted.

I recall Montgomery Wards had them on sale for $99.00 in 1977.  I handled one but the forearm rattle turned me off.  Yet magazines at the time rated these rifles highly for accuracy.

Savage has tried very hard to please American deer hunters.  They've designed and built quality and affordability into neat packages.  Yet their sales have consistantly languished behind Remington.  Unfair but true.
