Anyone know anything about the Lone Eagle???
« on: May 22, 2006, 11:08:02 AM »
Wondering if any of you have shot, or heard the reputation of the Magnum Research Lone Eagle single shot pistol????  Really want to know about their accuracy...

Thanks,

Jim

Well, they're no longer in production I know but I've never heard anything to spectacualr about their perfromance.  I have however read, heard and witness firsthand the performance of the Competitor.  basically the same design of the Lone eagle (same designer I believe) but with a much easier bbl interchangeabilty and a LOT more choices of chamberings.

I have two of them.  44 mag and  7mm08   They are accurate and I really like mine.  I have not taken any game with them but have been hard on the paper.

I shot one in 444 Marlin off sand bags twice. I rang a 6" gong at 100 yards both times, but after two shots, I decided I don't much care for a handgun that large.

I used a .44 mag. lone eagle for deer the season before this past one, and harvested the one in the picture with it at about 75yds off of a set of shooting sticks.  Used a handload of 20gr.2400, and a 240gr. xtp if I remember correctly.  Overall, I really liked the pistol, but like alot of guys that use a revolver say...it did feel like a sawed off rifle.  Not that there was anything wrong with it, I just wanted something that I could put in a holster when I was just walking through the woods.  The grip being more centrally located on it tended to recoil a bit different than a revolver too, and kind of bit into the web of my hand.  It was tolerable though after shooting it for awhile.  It shot great though.  Off of a bench, if I minded my p's and q's, I could keep 5 shots within an inch at 25 yds using a 2x bushnell trophy scope.  To you question, yes, it is a quality pistol that shoots very accurately, but it's most likely something that you will have to carry in your hand the whole time.  I liked it alot, but I like the way a revolver carries better, that's why I switched to using a blackhawk.

I hunt with revolvers and a Desert Eagle, but I have shot my buddy's 30'06 Lone Eagle at the range.  Its accurate, but had quite the blast effect.  It would probably be more fun to shoot one with a milder caliber.

I've got one in 35 Remington. Very accurate. Have not shot an animal with it yet but I feel it would be good to 150 yds with a rest. Put a Leopold 4x scope on it. Trigger could use some tuning. Recoil not too bad, of sand bags with a two handed hold the muzzle will flip vertical but it doesn't sting the hand like a 454 revolver does. I understand the toggle bar can break if you dry fire with the breech positioned in battery, I rotate the breech to the loading postion for dry fireing so as not to damage the gun. I realy like mine.

The Lone Eagles are very accurate. My 7-08 shot well. With the muzzle break it recoiled like a 357 (to me anyway-recoil is subjective) I like how the pistol handled (balanced) compared to the T/C Contender-Encore. The things I didn't like - you had to load open the breech, closed the breech then cock the pistol. Barrels aren't ready interchangable. Its more like changing a barreled action. The Competitor solves these problems. I carried mine in a shoulder holster with no problem

I haven't seen one in a while, but they are good guns. The only issue is that they all seemed to need a trigger job because the factory triggers were both heavy and creepy. That was true with the earlier ones, I don't know if this has been improved.
