Ring Height
« on: June 30, 2006, 10:27:38 AM »
I would like to put Talley Q/R rings on a Win 70 in 375 H&H.   I will be putting a 1.5x5 VXIII Leupold on the rifle.    I would like to use the low rings along with the factory iron sights.    Also, where can I find a replacement rear blade for the iron sight with a white line on it.  The old eyes don't distinguish the solid black well.  Does anybody have any experience with this set up.  Thanks,  Curly.

Curly,

One caution for you with this setup.  When my gunsmith tried it, the only position for mounting the scope resulted in the objective lens being positioned directly under the front rings where even modest tightening pressure would cause the lens to crack.  One solution would be to go to extension rings (if Talley makes them).  I opted to go to a Leupold 1.75 X 6 Vari X III which worked great for me in Africa on Cape buff.
So be careful if you go with the 1.5 X 5.

Thank you Ramhunter.    I was told that by the local gunsmith.  We looked at Leupolds sight, and the max ring spacing between the 1.5x5 and the 1.75x7.  The 1.5x5 has an extra 1/2" in the tube.  I will be placing the rear ring within 1/16" of the bell.  This should allow adequate room to mount the front.  I will contact Leupold to get a measurment on how far forward I can place a scope ring.    What height rings did you end up using?

Curly,

Sorry I took so long getting back to you.  I used the "low" ring height for mounting my scope.  But remember, I went with the 1.75X6 VariXIII.  The Talley website said this ring height is good for scopes with objectives up to 44mm.   If you have any questions, you could call Talley at 307-436-8724.  I'm sure they would be happy to answer any questions you might have.  Just be careful about the placement of the front ring if you go with the 1.5X5.  Good luck.

Thank you RamHunter.    I was on another forum called "African Hunter" and there was a thread from a hunter that used the VXIII 1.5x5.  He used the Leupold  Q/R rings and apparently crushed the front  optics.   They advised him to use the extended rings.   I have spoken to Gary Turner at Talley and he advised that to get the extra distance, I can reverse the base to get more tube room, or use an extended base.  I had a 2.5x8 on and used the extended base.  According to Leupold, the 1.5x5 has another 1/2" of tube length, allowing me to use the standard base.  I will mount the scope as far forward as possible due to eye releif.  The extended base protruded over onto the cartridge port opening bay about 1/16".  The standard base would be clear of the opening, giving a cleaner look.   I will look for the rings to be the low height.  I like being closer to the stock when it is possible.    Thanks again,  Curly
