Urban Myth Or What ?????
« on: October 27, 2005, 12:50:37 PM »
Folks: Had a fella tell me that reason he didn't use CF arrows was that if they shattered when they hit a deer, you had to throw most of the deer away. Seems that the meat would be tainted with shaft fragments that if ingested might puncture your innerds, possibly leading to internal bleeding and possible death  .   Would someone please set the record straight. That was passed around very commonly as truth at least in the early days of carbon arrows. Dunno for sure if it was true then but from what I hear it's not now.

I been told that if a carbon arrow breaks inside a deer you should cut away the meat around it to avoid any splinters. Havent heard of anyone ever having gotten in trouble on account of them tho. I dont sweat it at all on account of I still use alluminum myself & dont plan on changing any time soon.
They do seem pretty tough tho & if it was a serious problem I think we'd hear more about it. Only reason I dont switch is I find no faults with what I'v been using.

I have never heard of a carbon fiber arrow breaking upon impact with a deer.  Myself and several friends hunt using cf arrows and never experienced an issue.  I would not worry about it and carry on business as usual.  Don't believe the hype...

it was and issue back when they first came out.   it has since been fixed.  but if a carbon was to break in an animal,  use caution.

The only carbon arrow I've seen even break after hitting an animal was a month ago on a moose hunt when my hunting partner arrowed a 47" bull. During the blood trailing we found the end of the shaft from the fletching back to the nock and it had snapped off cleanly. No carbon fibres flapping in the breeze.

It was a beman 'Hunter' shaft.

Lets see! Since I started using carbons last year.

One deer.....pass through.
One caribou....pass through.
Three black bears....pass throughs.

One wood shop wall.... no pass through and it did splinter.  But it went through a 3/4" piece of plywood, 5/8" sheetrock, 3" fiberglass insuation and hung up on the steel siding.

Please don't tell the principal!!

shot a 6-pointer last week. no pass through but the deer pulled the arrow out and broke the shaft in the process, no splintering at all, a very clean break. oh shooting rhino 45/70.

I don't hunt with my bow but do use carbon arrows. It is very important to inspect you arrows after each shot to look for cracks. Have had two arrows disinegrate as they left the bow. Also be careful as you can get some nasty splinters.. overall the benifits out weigh the cons. to me anyways.

I have two carbon arrows in my plywood table for decoration (actually, we were bored one night... and an inside target sounded good) :)  and they had no splitting at all, even when hitting plywood at about 25 feet.

I put a Redhead carbon arrow with field point into the side of a CBS garage (mine - I missed  ) from 20 yards. It penetrated the brick. Did not pass thru, but did not shatter. It needed a new field point though.

Ive only had one carbon arrow break and it was sticking 3/4 the way out on the other side of the buck.after a 30 yard dash he fell over and broke the arrow. It was one of the cheapest carbon arrows that wally world sells. After that i went back to bemans :) .You do need to inspect the arrows after a shot.Ive had 2 get hair line cracks by the insert. This comes from trying to stack 2 arrows in the same hole.Between that and replacing vaines and nocks i only shoot one arrow at the target and retrive it now.Been doing that the last 3 years and are on the same arrows with no problems.
