Wisconsin cannoneers and Memorial Day
« on: May 26, 2006, 06:09:55 AM »
Hi all, browsed here often in the last few months and now have a question.

This morning I saw among the trailered boats, campers and 4-wheelers,heading North for the long Holiday Weekend, a cannon. Yup, a big brass looking cannon. And even though I'm new to cannons, it looked like he had all the goodies on the trailer for a real cannon, tubes for ramrods, two or three large wooden crates and of course the big brass cannon on it's carridge. Just a quick glimpse as he was Northbound on Hwy 41 and I was Southbound. I am not even going to guess as to what kind it was as I am to new to cannons.

I guess I have multiple questions.

Are there any Wisconsinites on the board?

Any idea where this cannon might be going? I'm guessing a Memorial Day function of some sort but you never know.

Any list of where cannoneers might be displaying their toys for parades and such or Civil War encampments/displays?

Sorry for the lengthy post and vague info but it's all I have.

Thanks in advance.

Found some info.

Two different different groups with Civil War era cannons.

Battery B, 4th US Light Artillery. www.batteryb.com

Cushings Battery. www.cushingsbatterywi.com

Both have events planned for this weekend. Check respective sites for details.

Also found out there was an Artillery Safety School in Boscobel last weekend.

Is Wisconsin a hot bed of artillery that I didn't know about? Hour of Googling says it might be.

C'mon, any of the WI artillerymen/women post here? Even golf ball mortar or signal cannon owners?
