.308 BLR?
« on: January 18, 2007, 03:04:41 AM »
I posted my question in the lever action forum, but thought I should add it here as well.

I'm new to the site and this is my first post.

I just picked up a used '81 .308 BLR (steel receiver) - it just shouldered so well and felt so good that I just had to have it.  I mounted a Nikon ProStaff 2x7x32 on it and am hoping to get out to the range this weekend.  Anyone out there have one in .308?  I've been reviewing some of the posts and it seems like it should be a fairly accurate gun.  Anyone have any opinions on what factory ammo this gun prefers?  I'm thinking 150 - 165 grain should be plenty for MI deer.

I had one and liked it very much. I did have to raise my head a fair amount to see through the scope, which I didn't like. The comb is fairly low on the BLR, so you might want to look into some kind of pad. All in all, it's a great rifle. As I recall, mine shot best with 180 gr loads.

Thanks for the info Syncerus - I didn't notice having to raise my head to see through the scope - just may have to go downstairs to check it out here shortly.  Do you remember the manu. of the 180 gr loads (remington, winchester, federal) - I spent most of my $$$ on the gun and scope and don't have much to spend on different loads/manufactuers to find the sweet round...

Congrats, you'll enjoy it, great rifle!! I"ve had a .308W M81 BLR since 1983, have a Leupold VariX 2-7x28 compact mounted in low Leupold rings on it, I only shoot 180 Core-lokts and 180gr Failsafes in it, they both shoot to the same POI, has for many years, have killed a bunch of deer and elk with it, never had any complaints from me, it's light and very comfortable to carry, the stock was a bit shiny for my tastes, but a rub with 0000 steel wool brought the shine under control.

Thanks for the information everyone - it seems as though I will need to go get some 180 gn core-lokts.  I checked my scope and have no problem lining up with it.  We're supposed to get 2-4" of snow tomorrow, so I doubt I will be able to get to the range.

That is a great lookin' deer quickdtoo, it looks like it has nice mass.
