s&w model 57 mountain gun
« on: September 05, 2007, 02:51:30 PM »
i saw one of these for sale today, and i'm trying to figure if it is a re-introduction of the 57 as a mountain gun
or if it is an original model 57 . what would be the difference between a 4" 57 and a mountain 57?
the reason i ask is last nite an old model 57 went for 955.00 and the one i saw today the mountain gun has a considerably less asking price. thanks, dan

the newly issued mountain guns have locks. I would guess thats what it is as you just dont come accross 657 mountain guns every day.

The original m57 4 inch has a heavier barrel than the current 57 mg.  The MG has a tapered barrel and is a bit lighter.  Also, now I believe the current 57s and other guns have a frame mounted firing pin while older guns have the firing pin integral with the hammer.  I don't know when the firing pin was changed.

I just wish they'd made the newest 57 MG in stainless.  I know lots of folks like blue but when I'm carrying my gun its almost always very wet for days at a time.  Stainless is a real help.

Back in the '90s somewhere around the '96 to '98 time frame I don't recall precisely I had a 657 Mtn. Gun and a 6" 657 both at the same time. I'm not at all convinced even to this day that the 657 Mtn. Gun is the one I actually agreed to purchase but it is what came home with me.

I distinctly recall seeing a .44 magnum Mtn. Gun in the case or at least that it was "marked as a .44 magnum". I didn't ask to see it or hold it but merely told the store owner to set it aside for me and I'd be back to pick it up before the week was over. At that time we had to wait two business days to recieve handguns here in Bama as I recall. He processed the paperwork and I came back for it a few days later.

Since I have always trusted him and was buying a new gun I didn't bother to even open the box until I got home. Imagine my surprise when my .44 Magnum Mtn. Gun turned into a .41 Magnum. I asked him why/how that happened and was assured that was the gun in the counter and that it had not said .44 but .41 on the tag. I don't really think so but since I didn't get the tag with it I can never be sure. Was I just careless in my reading of it and assumed it was a .44? Dunno. Matters not in the grander scheme of life.

It was a more accurate gun than my 6" 657 in my hands by a bit and was a fine gun. But in the end it was a .41 and I've never been able to become enamored with the .41 magnum and prefer the .44 so both guns went on down the road and became something else at my house. Neither of those I had contained the little lawyer inspired extra lock thingy and were nice guns but just had too small of holes in barrel and cylinder to suit me.

I agree, stainless is the way to go on any hunting gun, today. The weather is alway a constant factor, to deal with, in hunting.
