2-7x33 VX1 & VX11 Eye-Box?
« on: May 29, 2006, 05:31:50 PM »
Going to get a VX11 2-7x33(Wide Reticle).
The question is I have glassed the VX1 2-7x33,& I luv the view.
I know the FOV is about the same 14.4 v's 14.2 on 2 power. But it's mainly the eye-box view I'm not certain about on the VX11.

Just wanted to make sure the VX11 2-7x33 has the same(eye-box view)as the VX1.

I haven't had a chance to compare the VX11 2-7x33.Not many around my parts.
Mainly stock VX1's & VX111's.
Can any of you blokes help me out before I order one from overseas(US).

Simple question,is the VX11 2-7 x33 about the same as the VX1 2-7x33 in the eye-box department?

Cheers,
Tez.

We mounted a VXII 2x7x33 onto my wifes AR15 and she loves it.  The glass, coatings, cross hair adjustments and, the view will be better than the vxi.  I am thinking about mounting one on my 375 H&H soon.  I own a vxi 3.9, a vxii 3.7 and 6x18 and a VXIII 4.5x14 the last scope is a beauty but for the money vxii is the bang for the buck.

I don't know which magazine writer or elcheapo scope maker has coined the term "eyebox" but I don't have a clue what it means. Can anyone give me a definition of what "eyebox" refers to? It is NOT a term that existed when I studied Optical Theory or made my living working on optics.

GB, eye box is how far your eye can be from the center of the scopes eyepiece and still have a full field of view.

Graybeard,

don't feel bad.  I don't know the term either.

I can say that I much prefer the V-II over the V-I

My wife has a 2-7 V-II on her 7mm-08

Sez who? That has been the definition for eye relief for the last 50 years. So who all of a sudden has come up with a NEW name for it? I do have an idea but honestly don't know. I know of only one scope maker that uses the term and only one magazine writer. I have to think one of them decided to coin a new term for something that's had a standard name for longer than either have been in existence. I just absolutely refuse to change. Eye Relief is a better term and has been around longer than I have and that's a long time.

Eye relief refers to the distance, in millimeters or inches, that an optical device can be held from the eye and the full field of view can still be comfortably observed. Eye box refers to the 3-dimensional area behind an optical device in which the eye can be positioned to obtain a reasonable field of view.  Eye relief is measured in a line from the center of the ocular lense to the center of the eye, while eye box has as a component eye relief but also constitutes eye position off the eye relief axis.  So, eye relief does not describe what eye box represents.  I believe John Barsness coined the term.

Yup I believe so too. By the way that was the first time I've seen it explained in the manner you did. I can see the difference IF that's how he defined it. Still I think it's a term that has little or no usefulness in the real world. No one but him and one manufacturer who's products he is so obviously pushing use it.
