.204 Hornady 40 V-Max?
« on: June 02, 2006, 10:06:10 AM »
I have stuck with this ammo since buying my first 204. I have had excellent results on almost everything I have taken with this ammo. However, last year I can only recall maybe 5 exit wounds out of well over 100 animals taken. This year I have had big exits at a variety of different ranges. POI is dead on and hasn't changed. I thought maybe there was a difference in the factory loads, but all weigh the same OAL is the same! These aren't reloads! I am still making clean kills, but can't figure out what has changed. Last year, I had trouble finding the enterance wound on most g-hogs, last night I shot 4 and all of em "came apart"! Shots ranged from 100-260yds. This is very unusual from my previous experiences with the 204. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I had been shooting the 32 Grain Hornady factory load out of my 204.  I recently bought a box of them, and when I got to shooting them, the primers popped out of two out of three.  I wonder if Hornady has some hot loads out there in their factory ammo.

Just got 200 rounds of Hornady 32gr v max and my new fluted barrel in .204 this week. I will give it a try if the Virginia rain ever stops. Hope I don't have the primer issue. Shot 3 grounds hogs this week, 2 with a .223 and 1 with a .17. I am looking for a super ground hog gun in the .204. Is the .204 louder than the .223? Are the .32 gr v max destructive? I'm just getting the hang of gh hunting and still learning every day. I sit in the fields and wait them out, fun and relaxing. Do they have a feeding time? Is there "best time" to hunt them? Are there any decoys or calls that work? I got permission on some nice farms that are loaded with the pasture plummers. Didn't mean to ask so many questions but you guys are the Professionals, your post are well respected.

Hello Wes, Have you used a chrony on one or two of those?
I might call Hornday, I would question on blown primers in
factory loads, Sounds to me like they got them to hot.
See you in about 5 days! :D  Marvin

I find the best time to be later in the day when the sun starts to decline, from about 4pm onward. Though they come out anytime of day.
After a lite rain, when the grass is tender, they come out everywhere-THE best time in my book.
Oddly enough the Groundhogs here at the farm don't mind a little noise. We can sit on the tool box on the back of the truck with the stereo on and they come out :?
As for calls..I just use short burst high pitch wissle. Makes then stand up 8)

Aaron, thanks. I need all the help I can get! Did get to the range today in a light on & off rain. The .204 is LOUD. No blown primers or problems with the hornady ammo. The .204 fluted barrel is a keeper. After I got it sighted in I shot one group of 3 shots durn near one hole at 100 yards! Still like my .223 and WWB ammo. I may get out Tuesday to the farm, will put your advice to work. I have always been a deer and squirrel hunter just started on the ground hogs. I love it, like having a summer time season. Thanks again for the good advice hopefully I will have an exploding ground hog story by Friday.

:D  Glad to hear. No problem.
I haven't tried out my 204 yet, but it's soon a coming.  I look forward to seeing what it can do in comparison the my 223. It's a high performance little round and has a ton of potiential. Just like the 17HMR had/has. Now there are a lot of believers in it, and for good reason.
I guess you have to shoot it to see and put to rest just how good it is.
I can't wait 8)
If it's not something you regularly do...a suggestion if I may?..-Try to keep a pair of ear plugs with you man.
I ain't preaching about it, but I just don't want to wear a hearing aid later in life if I don't have too
Good shooting to ya, and your 204 :toast:
