Anyone Hunt W/.264 Mag

Just wanted to see if anyone uses a .264 Win Mag.  I had always wanted one and found one 3 years ago new, Winchester Super Grade 26" barrell and put Leupold 3.5 x 10 scope on it.  I have taken my biggest whitetail ever in Tex and a mule deer in Colorado and have been very satisfied with it.  I use ammunition from Superior Ammunition with a 140 gr Nos Partition.  It has a recoil pad on it and to me is a pleasure to shoot.  Not as much kick as my 7 Mag.  Just thought I would see if anyone else has good experiences with the .264. Thanks.

Allthough I don't currently have a 264 WM, The cartridge has always intrigued me.  I am sure I will someday find a gun for it.  Now, my 243 covers some of the game that this 264 could replace and do better at.  I know there are a few factory loads, but it is really a reloaders cartridge.  I love the higher weight, higher sectional density bullets that can be used in the 6.5 mm diameter.
So sorry, I am not the bucket of information you are looking for, but I too seem to think this cartridge could be a great whitetail/mule deer getter.  BuzzKill

i like the 140gr spire point hornady interlocks@3,200fps

I have used one off and on for years.   Finally decided that I would use my favorite "meat rifle" ( 7 mag )  for larger stuff and the .260 as a carry and ranch rifle.   I feel like the .260 does the same thing for me with less recoil in a smaller, lighter gun.  At least at the ranges I hunt.
But I can say the .264 mag is an awesome round.   I think the 7 mag craze here in S. TX seemed to thwart the popularity of a good deer cartridge.

I picked up a Winchester Mdl. 70 Classic Sporter  a few years ago at a gun show.I put a Burris 4.5X14 scope on it last mo..  I,m waiting for a quite day to test fire some 140 Gr Hornady SST bullets with Magnum powder and Rem. 9 1/2 primers.  Plan on using the 264 Win. Mag for mule deer this year if i can find a good reload.

Hey Tuck,

Sounds like a good load.  I keep reading that the 140 gr is the best all around bullet for the .264.  Good luck on your mule deer hunting.

I haven’t hunted with mine since I found out what my pre-64 M70 Westerner is worth.   :shock:   Escalating values has sent more than one good rifle to the realm of collector status.  Sorry to say that is what happened to my pre-64 M70 Alaskan too.  Lawdog

I've used mine to take a couple of antelope.  The two bullets used were the Nosler 125 grain Partition and the 120 grain Sierra SPT.  The Sierra's are used in the best grouping load that I've come up with so far.  I think if I were to seek anything bigger than deer or antelope, I would use the 140 or 160 grain bullet.  I don't see any drawback to using the heavier bullets on lighter game either. :eek:

I've used my classic sporter in 264 to take 4 whitetails in the last three years. I used 120 gr barnes x bullets with imr 7828/cci 250 in win brass. The longest one ran was 50 yds but he wasn't going anywhere. A blood trail anyone could follow. Now, I just need to find some yotes to try out my 95 gr v max loads. I use leupold vari x 3 3.5 to 10x scope.

My father had one custom built in about 1962 for an antelope gun.
Mauser Supreme 400 action- Douglas 26" medium heavy barrel, Bishop fully glassbedded stock.  He wanted to shoot the 100 grain bullet and so had the 1 in 12 twist on the barrel.
It shoots consistent 1/2" groups with the 100 grain bullets.
It is "not" a brush gun; however, when on post and you need to reach out and touch something, it is awesome!  I hand load 100 grain nosler partitions over 70 grains of H4831.
Its only problem is that the 1/12 twist doesn't stabelize 140 grain bullets very well.  Therefore, I load 120 grain for larger game.

Give the 120 gr. Barnes TSX a try.  I know a guy that uses a 6.5 Remington Magnum is a custome mauser that has a 1-11" twist rate and he is getting good accuracy(1.5" @ 100 yards) with them.  They perform as well/better than 140 gr. Nosler Partition's on larger game(Elk and Wild Hogs).  Lawdog

Thanks for the reply Lawdog.  I was seriously thinking along that line. My 264 shoots 120 Sierra just under an inch.  (but I love those 1/2 inch 100 grain groups!)
I presently have some 129 grain Noser CT's loaded to try, and if they don't group well I planned on going to the Barnes tsx 120's.
I shot some of the old Barnes 180 gr. .308 in my Ruger international.
My, what a lovely copper colored barrel!  I admit the little Ruger barrel is a little rough, but the old Barnes was a whole new experience.
When I finish shooting the 129 CT's I will post how things went.

Got a old winchester model 670 in like new condition, in .264 caliber.Is
so pretty I just can't bring myself in shooting it.Now if it had one of those crappy synthetic stocks on it,that would be a different story.

I uderstand the .264 bore, having shot plenty of them, but the 6.5 Rem was the fastest I ever shot. An old huntin' pard had one of the Remington 600's. He did some might fine shootin' but our huntin' was in the black timber and I never felt the need, for anything hotter than the 6.5x55 velocity class.
