I'm for the most part a flintlock shooter, but after visiting here a number of times and reading about the handies I just had to give one a try.I purchased an ultra in 223 and it is a shooter right out of the box.I was so anxious to try it out that I put my 4x shotgun scope on it and took it to the range.I can get consistant 3 shot groups of 1 1/2 inches at 100 yds with Am Eagle holow points and without making any changes shot 5 different brands of ammo ,including wolf ,a total of 15 rnds, into a 3 inch cluster.I'm going to have a new scope on it soon and will be taking it back to the range to shrink the group size and see how I do at 200. Ground hogs beware. This little rifle means business.

Welcome FLNT4EVR

You will love the 223 and with a little work you will be able to shrink the groups to will under 1 in at 100 , some handis do not like the wolf or silver bear ammo , mine hates it .

The gold standard of 223 handi ammo is the Win. white box stuff and at 15 bucks for 40 you can't go wrong .

Cheak the FAQs at the top of the page for lots of good info on these wonderful rifles .  :D

Welcome aboard FLNT4EVR!! :D  I'm fond of flinters myself, they're as addictive as owning Handis/Ultras, although I have quite a few more of them than flinters!!

In my handi  the wolf and the silver bear gave the worst accuracy, with a couple of stuck cases with each. Definately not what I would use for hunting.I have to try some different brands of hp ammo with the new scope . Any sugestions.Ther is a gunshop close by that has about every brand of 223 that you could name , with prices fron 4.59 for wolf to 15.00 and more for premium ammo.

The 2 that shoot best in my rifle are the Win. white box 45 gr. hps and the Rem. permier 50 gr. hps . some have had good luck with the Black hills stuff also .

Depending on the rate of twist 1-9 or 1-12 you may be able to shoot the larger grain bullets . the 1-12 do not seam to do well with much over 55 grain .

You can look in the FAQs to find the year the rifle was made and what twist it has .

According to the paperwork that came with the rifle it was made in 05 and has a 1in 12 twist. I will give both those cartridges a try. Also, I read somewhere that Winchester made their 64grn soft point  specificaly for 1 in 12 twist barrels .Does anyone here know wether that is true? I would like to give them a try.

Use the search feature, the win 64gr bullets have been discussed before. You'll also find a lot of info in the FAQ and Help that will answer questions about your rifle and shooting it, like when it was actually made, the paper work that comes with the rifle may very well have been printed long before the rifle was produced, the only way to know when it was made is to use the serial number on the frame.

Does it have an ejector or an extractor? You can check the twist rate for sure by putting a tight fitting jag w/patch and making a mark on the rod and push it in the barrel 12 inches. If it makes one full revolution it is a 1-12, if it makes more than 1 revolution it is a 1-9.

If the barrel is 22" long, and the rate of twist is 1 in 12, shouldn't the rod almost make 2 full rotations?  And the 1 in 9 make almost 2 1/2?

Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Thanks,

To determine twist rate, you only need to allow the rod to turn 1 full turn, the distance it moved in one turn is the twist rate, that distance will be 12" or less for a .223. You're not comparing barrel length to twist rate, length of the barrel has no bearing on twist.

the rifle has an ejector, and the sn # has an HU prefix

Hehe... an acquaintance of mine calls them Flinch-Locks cause if you can't control your flinch when the pan goes off you can forget about accuracy.  Never shot one myself.

U denotes 2004, so it's definitely a 1:12" twist, they didn't start the 1:9" until 2005 in the fluted ultras and later on all the rest of the .223 barrels.

Sorry Busta and thanks Quick.

After reading Quick’s reply, then rereading Busta's statement, I finally saw that he said to "push it in the barrel 12 inches".  For some reason, my simple mind stopped reading after the word barrel.

Time to go back to school and work on my reading and comprehension.  :)

Thanks,
