1895ss questions
« on: May 20, 2006, 03:19:33 PM »
i have a chance to pick up a like new one for a decent price
it has a red rubber buttplate on it and im wondering what year it was made? the serial number is 0203xxxx that is one full digit less than a new one
it doesnt say microgrooved rifling on it anywhere so im wondering what kind of rifling does it have?? the ballard cut??
also would a marbles or a lyman tang sight work on it with the pistol grip?
i know i would have to tap another hole for it to be mounted but im wondering abt the height??
any help on any of this would be appreciated
thanks

If there isn't any letter prefix to the serial number, then your 1895ss was produced in 1998.

If it were microgrooved, it would be stamped on the barrel.  If it isn't, then it is Ballard rifling. Ballard rifling is easy to spot by using a bore light and looking down the barrel.

I have a tang sight on my cowboy rifle, but they are easily damaged. Your 1895ss is a modern rifle. As being so, if it were mine, I'd go with a good receiver sight.....or even XS ghost ring sights would be good. Once you drill and tap the tang, it's there forever!

hogship, If you could help me out concerning serial #'s. I have a 1895 with a prefix letter "B" then 008xxx. There is no microgroove stamping anywhere, yet it has a microgroove barrel. Straight stock and lever and no external safety. Ive posted this before with no real help. I've also checked a site on Marlins that had serial # and year made and yet still no help. I'm curious to year of mfg. If I'm not mistaken they went with the curved buttstock around '84. so I'm thinking its got to be prior to that, unless of course it was converted. Any help would be appreciated. CRASH87
