? about value of Colt 1851
« on: April 11, 2003, 07:31:23 AM »
Howdy Pards,

I got to talking to a friend about CAS and he told me about a gun that belonged to his Great Grandfather. He told me it had some kind of scene on the cylinder that looked like a ship and it was a Colt. We got to talking about it and he asked me if I could find out anything about it and what it might be worth. (not looking to sell it)

Colt 1851 36 cal. 7 1/2" Barrel Ser.# 140xxx

All the #'s match

Barrel has no pitting and good rifling

Cylinder has some surface rust in the chambers

30%+ of the blueing is left with no surface rust

Walnut grips look aged but no cracks or chips

All the screws are in good shape

He also has a bullet mold that he thinks is original to the gun. It has 2 cavities. Conical and ball.

Any info would be appreciated.

Jax, I ain't ignorin' ya, it's jist that I ain't got a clue.  I helped a frends wife pick out a '60 Colt for his Christmas present.  Only slightly better than you describe this one and without the mould.  She paid $650.....23 years ago.   It seems the way collectables go, if the mould is an original, it'll double the value of the set,  documentation if present will triple the value.   It could go any where from a little gold mine to a nice piece that you can shoot occasionaly.
However!  It sounds to me like it should be about $149.95, ask your friend where I should send the check.

Thanks for the help Pards. I'll pass on the offers to tak this old thing off his hands.  I already told him I would trade him, straight across, for a brand new Pietta 51 Navy. He told me he would think about it. :) LOL

William, Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Howdy William,

Thanks for the interest, Pard. I am still waiting to hear from a couple of folks.  Right now it is looking to be valued at about $1200-$1400 without the mold.  We haven't been able to find if this came priginal with the gun.

your a good guy--you will come up with a good price. your post pricked an interest and some of the webs amaze me with the price they are asking for some weapons--it is also amazing that you can find some good shooters for about the same price or just a bit more than new ones.
