Time from kill to skinning ?

Leaving Tuesdy for first bear hunt. I have read that with bear it is important to skin the bear sooner verses later. What is soon and what is later?

Skinning afterr 4 -5 hrs or 1 - 2 hrs? (Ambient temp aroun 65 degrees - western Oregon coast).

With temps that high, then you need to skin that hide asap. The skinning starts right after the bear is down and the photo session is over.

I dont know what you are planning on doing between killing the bear taking pictures and skinning it?  Any animal you kill you should take care of right away.

I've never been Spring bear hunting, and I understand they don't have much fat then, so this suggestion may not apply: get as much covering fat off as possible as it holds heat even better than the hair and hide! Fall bears here in Minnesota have 8-12 gallons of fat that's easy to get to, easy to remove, and makes great cooking oil. 8)

My 2 cents is it is much easier while you are skinning the bear to take the time and do a good job skinning off all the fat you can, so you'll have less fleshing to do later.

got my first black bear last monday, it was shot at 2pm, gutted right away. was then put in the back of my van and drove 1 hour home. had to go to work so i placed it in a cool dark area of the celler, poured two bags of ice inside the cavity and a two more on top for good measure. skinned him when i got home that night, no fat what so ever. was about 8 hours in total from the shot till i placed the cleaned carcass in my freezer and no harm to the meat what so ever, temp that day was around 20 C.

Shot mine in the fall on NW Washington, about a 60 degree day.  Took 40 minuted to get to him on the hiilside, another hour to gut/transport to my vehicle, 45 minutes home (with 3 bags of ice in his chest cavity), then skinned.  Total 2 1/2 hours until skinning began.  We had no problems with rancid/gamey meat (I was very careful to remove all fat), and the rug came out perfect, and has stayed that way for going on 4 1/2 years.

Ideally, skinning immediately would be best, but in the Coastal NW climate, and the easy livin' diet the bears there sometimes have, I think you have a little more time than if you filled your tag in Bend, Okanogan or someplace like that.  I'm sure others will vigorously disagree, but that is my experience.
