Super Redhawk in .500 S&W mag???
« on: April 19, 2005, 11:58:59 AM »
How soon will we see a Ruger Super Redhawk in .500 S&W mag??  Or will we see a totally new 500 handgun from Ruger?  I hope they don't take too long, i just don't like how the smith & wesson looks with the long ported barrel.   I'd rather see a heavier weighted longer barrel.  BigBill

I think the closest you will come to that is a BFR in 500 MAG. I doubt if Ruger ever intends to  make a 500 MAG.

I have both a BFR and a S&W 500. I love them both.  :D

I have the S&W 500 in 83/8" barrel. I think it looks great. I don't care for the hunter model with a 10" barrel. I don't know when Ruger will make a 500 or if he ever will. :D

BigBill,
I wouldn't hold my breath.  They would have to re-design the SRH to take a larger cylinder.  They won't even make a change in the Super Blackhawk to accomodate their own .480 caliber.
Best,

I wouldnt be suprised if the folks at Ruger make some kind of .500 magnum chambered revolver, especially if S&W continues to have such good luck with it. But lets not forget Ruger has a new big magnum of there particular own . The .460 Ruger ! Thats going to be one bad puppy ! 2500 FPS with a 300 grain bullet I hear.

The .460 is a Smith & Wesson not a Ruger.

I'm sure Ruger will make a revolver in 500 S&W its just a matter of time like when they made the redhawk in 44mag.  I'm going to wait for a RUGER I just don't like how the S&W looks.  I'm sure colt won't make one their always negative when i send them letters and way late when they do get on board making something new like the 44mag.  They told me once years ago they had no intention of making a revolver in 44mag.  Ruger answered my letter and told me in was in the works and i purchased two Redhawks in 44mag the minute they were available and i still have them to this day.  I may send them a letter on the 500S&W and see what they say.        BigBill

This is why gun makers are into big profits they snooze too much and coast thats the american way right?  Maybe EEA(russians) will make one first?

No where's close to the 500 MAG. A doubt if Ruger will even attempt the S&W460 MAG. I said it before, the closest you will come to a Ruger in either of the calibers mentioned is from Magnum Research in the BFR and they are not double actions. The Smith & Wessons have that honor. :D

Maybe Ruger could do a .500 JRH? Its 1.4" long, in the popular .500" caliber. They won't have to design a new frame. I had a .500 Linebaugh SRHK a few years back, and although mine was a 5 shot, maybe Ruger could still fit it in their SRHK??? But then again, its somebody elses name on the brass? Like the .480, Ruger might go with a case longer than the Corbon .500 Special, and shorter than the .500 JRH, and put their name on it?

Yeah, the 480 puts out about 1300ft-lbs, and the 500mith puts out about 2500ft-lbs.  The 480 is still a big chunk of lead, but not even close to the power.

I am still in shock that anyone could think that a butt-ugly ruger, especially the super redhawk, looks better than a S&W...

The last time I wrote Ruger was some time ago. They said that had no intention of bringing the product in question to market. I had written to ask them about the idea of making a synthetic stocked stainless steel bolt action rifle. That gun was announced a few months later.

I guess they probably don't need or want our input. If they did, they may not be as fiscally challenged as they appear to be right now.

Ruger's logic is so notably lacking in their failures to build that I actually wouldn't be completely surprised if they built the highly impractical (though popular) 500 S&W while continuing to really avoid supporting their own less powerful but much more practical pumpkin launcher: the 480. Any .500 Magnum from Ruger would require a complete new gun to be designed around it. The frame size on what they have now is just too small. If they will or not depends on sales. Sales translate into $$$$ and that is what staying in business is all about. Remember just a few years ago when Safety Hammer purchased S&W from Tompkins PLC they were losing money. That has all been turned around with the introduction of the .500 S&W Mag. and the new .460 S&W Mag. along with the guns that shoot it.  Smith & Wesson is now making money like crazy. Ruger is seeing this and in time will have to respond. These guns are selling like crazy. More than even they thought they would. If Ruger is smart they are designing right now. If they don't it will simply translate into dollars lost.  Bill T.

If I remember correctly, the .44 mag was a collaberative effort between S&W and Remington. That time Ruger caught wind if it and almost beat S&W out with the gun to fit, aka The .44 flattop.
