About foreman oil
« on: October 14, 2005, 01:37:24 PM »
hey I have a 2003 foreman 450 and was wondering if i could use a oil like mobil clean 5000. It says on the atv to use 10w-40 Sf or SG grade. But This mobil oil i have says API service sm/cf but on top it says api sm/cf, sl,sj,sh,sg. So I assume it means it is good enough quality for those too. So could i use this oil?? Also does a foreman have a oil filter, if so where???? thnks

I would defiantly recommend using a ATV specific oil.  Most car oils are not designed for a wet clutch set-up.  If a person does use them, it could lead to problems in the future.

You can never go wrong with a service or repair manual!

I just bight the bullet and buy the honda specific oils at the dealer.. There are enough things to go wrong in life without adding to it.

If you don't to spend for the high price dealer oil use a heavy duty diesel engine oil like Shell Rotella T or Chevron Delo 400 in 15w-40. We run the diesel oil in our '82 and '85 Honda Big Red since they were new and the engines still run like new with no oil burning and clutch issues.

Honda ATVs are Alaskans' "cars" in many rural areas. Most folks seem to run regular auto engine oil in their's although some do use the Honda branded oil. Typically those who feel that they need to buy an OEM oil product for their engines tend to be folks who are less informed in many ways. They are also the folks who have more junk vehicles parked in their yards and need to buy new more often. Those who put the many thousands of miles on their machines every year use regular motor oil and change it regularly. My old 300 TRX has had a constant diet of 10W-30, usually Pennzoil or Chevron, and, while the machine is wearing out, the engine is still running well and going strong. Buy oil rated as the manufacturer requires (or better: further along in the alphabet) and you'll be fine. The whole wet clutch argument sounds good but experience does not back it up. Certain types of equipment do require special lubricants. Just make sure you are using the right type and rated product. Brand does not matter. Besides, ATV makers do not make oil - they just market it with their name on it.

I have never in my life bought manufacturer brand oil.  Auto engine oil is fine to use as long as it doesn't say "Eneregy Conserving" on the label.  It messes up the wet clutch.

As for the filter, don't know on the Foreman, but my Rancher has a paper filter located under a cap on the lower right front of the engine.
