Backyard bow practice.
« on: February 11, 2006, 05:37:56 PM »
My wife and I are moving into a house finally this week. I'm so sick of living in a sardine can(apartment). Anyways, I'm really excited as we'll be able to shoot our bows at home. This makes for much more frequent practicing. Only problem is that it is in you're run of the mill suburban neighborhood. The yard is approx. 25 paces diagonally from one corner to the other. ( approx 20 yds effective shooting distance)Woods behind us with neighbors on either side of us. Typical 6 ft 1x6 board fence surrounding. I'm a little concerned about shooting in this confined of a space. I have seen people shooting in their back yards elsewhere, but I grew up shooting with no houses within several hundred yards.

My thoughts are leaning towards 3 square hay bales stacked and caddy-cornered as a back stop, with a bag target for primary target.

Another thought would be 6 bales. 2 stacks of three. Each stack parallel to the fence, but pushed up in the corner, again with a bag target for primary.

Anyone else in a similar situation, or have experience with this?

well i sure havent been in that position, i always found a places somewhere to shoot. BUt i would think the hay would be fine. I mean if you miss by that much then you shouldnt be shooting a bow anyways if you know what i mean haha.

I live in town and yard is a tad over 20 yards. Perfect for my 20 yard pin. I use 'the block' and a 3d deer target. Can honestly say I have never not hit the target at 20 yards in the back yard. I dont want to miss as I have a wooden shed as a backstop, dont want to miss and hit that.

All my other practice is at my bro-in-law's farm just out of town where we have a small 3d course setup. Also out of town is a free 3d course that is part of the pro tour.

i dont shoot at home any more......but when i used to i built a bunker.  i took two pieces of plywood that were about 4'x 2"  then in each corner i drilled a hole and put a 4' piece of threaded rod into the holes.  so now you have one piece of plywood with 4 threaded rods sticking up through it.  then id stack cardboard flat and even on the front onto the plywood between the rods.  after it would get to the top of the threaded rod....id put the top piece of plywood on and with washers and nuts screw the top piece down conpressing the cardboard.  then release it and fit more cardboard into it.  then compress it again.....id have to do that about 3 times and then screw it down so the whole apparatus is about three feet high.  so then you have a good backstop that you can set your target in front of.  its hard to pull arrows out of..but stops them very good if you miss your target.  if you sink a broadhead into it...its pretty much gonna stay there unless you take it apart.

Hay bales are good, but bulky. I'd suggest styrofoam insulation boards, layered 8 inches thick. More expensive, maybe, but easier to look at and no rats.
