Too much powder?
« on: June 18, 2006, 01:48:23 AM »
I just started trying to reload a 218 Mashburn bee.  The only reference I have found is in Cartridges of the world.  It lists a load of 17.3 gr of 4198 for a 50 gr bullet.  Only problem is that I can't get all the powder in.   I can't even get 16gr  in the case.  I ended up using the load  for the 45gr bullet, and even then,  the recomended 16.3 gr of 4227 almost fills the case.  What gives?

I double checked the data for you and it's right. Did you use a drop tube? If you don't have one try to get the powder to swirl around the funnel before it goes into the case.

I don't have a drop tube, I think I can guess but what is it?  I tried like you said to swirl the powder, put it in a little bit at a time and tamping the case to get the powder to settle, but even then that only got me to 16.8gr.  I tried putting the powder a little at a time and packing it in with a dowel just to see, no better results.
I wanted to load some 50 gr and 55 gr bullets so I am thinking of starting with some loads for the regular 218 Bee and working up from there.

You have to realize that the posted loads were "developed" by Ackley.  He had a slight tendency of stretching the truth a little.

Plus, you only stipulated "4198" and not which "4198" you are using.

It was IMR 4198.  Now you have me worrying, if Ackley streched the truth, are my loads too hot?  I had loaded some batches from 14.5gr of H4227 up to the 16.3 by half gr increment for the 45 gr bullet.  I will see if I the lesser loads are too hot.

I looked up some loads for the standard .218 Bee in the 42 endition Lyman.

Max 50 grain bullet, 14.0 grains of DU PONT 4198.

Max 45 grain bullet, 12.5 grains of DU PONT 4227.

Loading for the improved rounds gets tricky.  Keep good records on your loads.  One of my brothers has a number of rifles using improved cases.  He has a good mind, but it my opinion keeps poor records.  If he had a stroke or dropped his collection would lose value because nobody would know how to load for it.

DuPont became IMR.  http://members.aol.com/mudsmeller/chronologies.html

About the original post: I've seen load data like that before. I discard it immediately when presented with an overflowing case.  Really, common sense has to be applied in these things.

I had a similar experience recently loading a 180 gr. JHP over a "minimum" load of H110, that being 29 grains.  That load almost filled the case and I'm sure the max load, which I believe was 32 gr., would've overfload.  As it turned out, the 29 gr. was too hot for my 4" 629 and I went to another powder.
