45/410 Contender Barrel
« on: June 12, 2006, 02:33:18 PM »
Just bought a used 45/410 barrel. it does not say whether or not it uses 2.5" or 3" shells. Is the 45 colt the only bullet it will shoot or can it shoot the 45 long colt. I called TC and a woman answered the phone and she advised me that all barrels will shoot the 3" 410 shell but she had me so confused I forgot to ask about the 45 cal. Could anyone please help.
Thanks'
Benny

45LC will be just fine, And .410shorter than 3" are getting hard to find [around me anyway] so luckily the TC to my knowledge , has always been chambered for the 3"..  MV

Any I have seen are chambered for a 3" 410.  There really is not such a thing as a 45LC, it is really a 45 Colt.  The Long was added to the generic description people used to distinguish the 45 Colt from the shorter 45 round (45 Shofield, I think) when purchasing ammo since nobody could remember Shofield.

Thanks guys for the help. I just finished shooting 10 rounds of 2.5 in 410 's and the gun is sweet. I had some 3" #6 and what a pattern a 40 yds. pretty awesome. Shot 10 rounds of these also. I'm going to get some 45 colts tomorrow and see what they will do. May even try those to white tail hunt if they shoot as good as the 410. If anyone has any secrets on the 45 colt please feel free to share. This is a new adventure for me and the recoil on this thing so far is unbelievably light. A lot of fun to shoot. Thanks again for your help.

All 45/.410 bbls that I have worked w/ have shot the 3" .410 wonderfully. and the 45 rather unimpressive. The best we ever came up with were fairly heavy  [225to 250] cast lead w/ gas check, loaded from the speer manual for contender only. [hot] we had best luck loaded quite long, as the freebore is quite "generous" w/ the .410 chamber.. Always wanted to get another to try brass closer to the length of the .410 in it!!! I have an experiment that I will share if it works out ... Later.  MV

If you are a handloader and you've got some time, this looked to me like the way to go:

EDk:

Thanks so much for that post on the wildcat load from Mike. Man i do reload and am in the process of taking 30-30 cases and making 7-30 Waters for another super 16 that I have. I do have a passion for the 16's in the contenders. the info from the sight you gave me was and is very interesting. Thanks again And May GOD Bless.

MOOSE 4 GOD,
Before you shoot 410 slugs and 45 long colt out of the 45/410 barrel REMOVE the choke tube.
I use 255 gr flat point cast bullets from lyman #2 lead it will work for deer at close range I think I was getting 4-6" groups last time I used the 45 colt. my contender barrel has the normal T/C iron sights so this helps a lot
This barrel would not be my first choice for deer hunting,

I've had the best results in my .45/.410 barrel using 300 grainers at around 1100 fps..stout..would work for most critters up close.  I have used a B-Square vent rib mount designed for shotguns to mount a red-dot sight on my barrel..works equally well with shotgun or the .45 Colt.

Thanks RickyP it did come withe the paper to take the tube out for slugs and the 45. Think slugs will work just fine for the area I need it in. My main barrel for field and the edge of field hunting I will be using a super 16" 7-30 Waters. Gotta love that barrel.
