POI WAY to high
« on: June 24, 2006, 05:27:04 PM »
Got the williams target sight on my 45/70 handi.(not a BC) Got the lyman front hooded sight. I even had the barrel dovetailed instead of using the shorty ramp. I have the shortest front sight that they make.
Problem is it shoots about 13-15 inches too high at 50 yards. The rear sight is all the way down. What height front sight am I going to have to get?
Both loads I tried shot right about the same. 40 grains of varget under a lee rnfp 405 grainer, and 11 grains of unique with the same bullet.
These darn sights are gonna be the death of me yet.

You need a higher front sight to lower POI, the .404" is the shortest, .584" the tallest, .494" mid height. I have an extra .584" sight if you want to try it, PM me if interested.  You can download the Williams catalog, in it they have instructions for determining sight height.

What ever front sight you have now is too low.

You say your rifle shoots 13-15"high at 50yards.

Let us say the distance between your front and rear sight is 22" or what ever.

50yrds = 1800 inches. divide 1800by the distance between the two sights 22" or more whatever you have.. 1800:22=81.81.

Next you divide 15" high by 81.81 = 0.183"
That is how much extra frontsight heigth you need.

I think you would need a small ramp, unless you can lower the rear sight.

Of course this would change if your in between sight distance is different.

Yes, that is what you need. Get an extra 20 Thou then you can adjust your rear sight up a bit to get your P.O.I. bang on.

Using your figures I need a sight that is .587 high. They make a .584, so that is what I shall try.

Good news! The gun shoots just a fuzz low now, after putting on the taller front sight. And it could be dead on, as I was in a hurry to try it out.
Thanks Quick!
(IM sent btw)

You're welcome, glad to help. Maybe one of the Lee Shaver inserts would suit you better, I like em a lot with my old eyes!!
