220 Swift handi

Has anyone re-chambered a handi 223 into a 220 swift , will the handi handle the pressure of the swift .

I plan to rechamber mine to .220 Swift.  I purchased a reamer to do the job sometime later..    

It'll handle the .220, there's high pressure cartridges out there.   I personally plan to back off my loads to 22-250 speeds to keep pressures down..   ...thus maybe prolonging barrel life

I don't see why you can't. In fact with the rim design & the case being
slightly smaller in front of the rim than the 22-250 & the case being longer, it may work a little better than the 22-250 in the Handi, although I
have no way to prove that. I love the round, I used one on a bunch of
Varmits back in the 70's(Ruger 77 Varmit). About the only thing I don't
like about the case is that it has to be trimmed alot. But, if you neck or partial size & load to upper end 22-250 performance (seems that handi's group better at normal pressures anyway), it should do great.

I almost wish you had not brought this up. I got to thinking & the new
24" fluted barrel would make a fine conversion. It is hard to get a Swift in
factory form with a 1-9 twist, but with this barrel you would have one & you would have a 22centerfire firing heavy bullets like the 77mk with 6mm wind bucking. I guess that I could send one of those barrels to Mr. York for re-chambering about the same time that I send a 25-06 for the 338-06 job. Thanks Mr. Stimpylu32 for showing me how to spend more money!

I was thinking the same thing about the 1 in 9 twist for the 220 and heavy bullets , yet i may go the full job and just have the 240 cobra done .

Also have been thinking , with the 1 in 16 twist of the 22 mag. maybe a 218 bee is in my furture as they seem to do well with the 1 in 14 twist .

I would think that the Swift would do better with a 26" barrel,all of the Swifts I've seen are 26".There's no doubt about the Swift being a topnotch Varmit caliber for sure. Maybe FredM will comment on this one. Digger

Maybe a little better but there is no 26" to do the conversion anyway & it
would still be faster than the 22-250. You are looking at a case capacity of 46.25 grs. of water for a 224 bore so it would be a small advantage whereas the 25-06 has a case cap. of 65.03grs.(35% more) & slower powder with a 25 bore & it benefits from a 26" tube a little more than the Swift does.

Did any of you fellows see the one that just sold on ebay. It was orginally a 24" 223 bull barrel.....
