Ford F250 6.0 Diesel Milage
« on: January 01, 2005, 05:34:16 PM »
I have a 2004 F250 6.0 diesel 4 x 4.  When just around town and back and forth to work I get about 17 mpg, but when I go on a trip on the Interstate the gas milage drops down to between 14 & 15 mpg.  I have asked the dealer about this and they keep saying that this doesn't sound correct but they still haven't come up with a good answer or fix.

Does anyone else have any experience similar to this?  Or can anyone tell me what milage they are getting from a similar vehicle.

Are you pulling a travel trailer or large boat? If an automatic transmission is it shifting into drive or overdrive. Is your airfilter clean-also check the ducting for air intake for obstuction. Does your water temp stay where it should going down the highway. Are you getting excessive smoke at highway speeds.

Doesn't sound right either.  I get around 18 or so in town.  Haven't done a road trip in a bit to determine highway mileage.

I love the truck though.  Even at 10 degrees with the plug-in it still starts fine.

Not for the milage I noted.  If I pull a 16' trailer I get between 12 & 14.

It is shifting as it should as far as I can tell.

No problem with air filter.  I haven't checked the ducting.

Yes, it runs very cool.  In fact, it takes forever to warm up on a cold morning.

No smoke at all.

Daveinthebush,

do you have a 6.0 or a 7.3?  The dealer told me the 6.0 doesn't have a plug-in so I never bothered to check it out.  Mine takes about 30 minutes to warm up if it's cold outside.

What speed and what RPM's are you turning on your Interstate trips?

Dealer should have told you that you get the best fuel economy at around 1800 to 2000 rpm.  I have an '03 F250 FX4 Crew cab with auto, etc.  I get  ~ 18 back & forth to work.  If I get it on the highway and keep it between 65-70 mph I get 19 mpg.  If I start running 75 - 80 mph, the fuel economy drops to 12 - 14 mpg depending upon terrain, etc.

Slow it down and it'll give better fuel economy.

:D All of a sudden I started having a problem with my 6.0.  When I got down on her merging into traffic she would bog down.  To me it acted like a gasoling engine that was straved for fuel.  Anyway, after Ford removing and replacing parts for almost, I finally convinced them that it was in the turbo.  They replaced the turbo, the problem was solved, not only that, my mileage went up, a trip over the week-end got me almost 26 miles per gallon, around town it is averraging 16.4 MPG.  In my opinion, that is great for a F-250,CrewCab, 4x4.

Just bought a 2004, 6 liter Diesel, F-350 Dulley, Super Crew, 4X4.  Around town I'm averaging 14.3 mpg.  Haven't had it on the road yet, so don't know what the highway milage will be.  Plan on taking it to Sourdough Campground on the Gulkana this weekend should know after that.
