45-70 cast bullet ?
« on: June 19, 2006, 08:59:54 AM »
I want to load some 45-70 to duplicate the original Govt 45-70-500 load in my trapdoor. Is the Lyman 457125 500grn round nose bullet close to the same as what was used for this load?

It is supposed to be! Some were cut for blackpowder loads with smaller diameter noses and rings. Other (newer) one are a couple thousandths fatter,  457125, First Acquaintance...and a question  at cast boolits has more info

I just finished reading Spencer Wolf's book on the subject, and he says the newer Lyman moulds aren't right, they've changed them from what they were. The correct mould now is made by SAECO, and NEI. For the 405gr. go with the hollowbase Lee mould. BTW, if you don't have his book you should get a copy. It has all sorts of useful information in it about making a Trapdoor run correctly.
