375 Bellm reloading query
« on: July 29, 2006, 03:49:02 AM »
Mike Bellm just rechambered a barrel for me 375 x 444. I have fireformed a few brass . The new brass headspaces on the shoulder not the rim, correct? I backed off the FL die 1 complete turn so that I don't set back the shoulder on the fired brass. This should leave a near zero headspace in my Contender(.001 is recommended). The action closes easily. After fireforming the brass, the neck of the brass is .277 long and the case is 2.260 LOA. I have cast the chamber and there is plenty of room for the neck and the throat is quite long. The question is : Is the length of the neck at .277 sufficient to hold the 270 gr bulllet?
All imput is welcome,
Mike

I am not familiar with this cartridge, but if it is formed from 444 brass, and they left you with a .277" neck, I am guessing they are after max case capacity.  I would say it's not ideal as far as rough handling of ammo is concerned, but will probably be OK., providing you have enough neck tension.  i have loaded lots of rifle rounds with not much more bullet in the case, but none with this heavy of a bullet.  I'd load some, and try to twist/wiggle the bullet around.  This will give you an idea of how durable the loaded rounds are.  They may be better than you think.  It sounds like you have what you have, and if they won't take rough handling, you will have to take steps to prevent damage to them.  If it's mostly a range gun, no problem, if for hunting, you may have to find a stiff holder of some sort to carry spare ammo.  With a 270 gr 375 cal. bullet in a 444 case, you'll probably only need 1 anyways!

I do not know why a 375 Bell m would be censored but it was:-). I do not need to use a 270 gr bullet I am now using Hornady 225sp's and they are totally adaquate and they most likley will have enought neck tension. Thanks for the input.
