The lathe and mill are in, set up and at last I can turn my time towards cannon and mortars.

I just got back from the scrap yard where I picked up a 2.25" diam steel round, some 15 inches long, and a beautiful brass round, of 3" diameter, just under a foot in length.

Any project suggestions for the brass? The lathe is only a 9" swing so please bear that in mind and the mill is definately of the mini ilk.

The steel looks destined for a couple of golf ball mortars...

It's bronze not brass, but it's an idea.

IIRC it's a .850 bore that will shoot a 2 oz. lead ball.

That's a very nice looking project. I'd never really thought of turning a cannon.

Do you think it would be possible to build a golfball mortar out of the brass?

I know its only 3" in diameter, giving a barrel thickness of only 0.6" although I could keep the powder chamber pretty small.

I would use it mainly as a signal cannon, without a projectile, for the 4th and such.

As such, maybe I could bore it out to 1.5", leaving a little more in the walls.

That's something I'll let someone more knowledgeable than me give a definable answer.
