HEY, I'm done in here.
« on: June 10, 2012, 08:12:18 AM »
Wow I feel better, yep, I finally got off the pot.

I am the proud owner of a Ruger New Model Blackhawk.  It is a 6 1/2" barreled model blued W/ walnut grips. I could never decide between .327 mag and .44 mag so pretty much split the difference with a .41 mag.

It is not pristine, which actually is a godsend.  I traded a pristine SIG that I could not bring myself to carry. I would call it handling wear. The area where your trigger finger comes in contact with the frame shows some wear and maybe light pitting, the hammer has a bit of tarnishing on the sides near the spur.  The cylinder has almost no discernible ring though.

The dealer convinced me it was tight, and looked to have been shot little. ( He could have told me anything he wanted as I know very little about wheel guns ).

Any idea as to age of this thing? It does not have the Warning paragraph on the barrel, and shows South Port Conn. USA   #41-144**.

I would like to thank everyone for putting up with my questions and procrastination. The trade is what sealed it, cost me the P-225 and $26.

Welcome to the 41 club.  Ruger's web site puts that S/N at 1977.  You're gonna like that revolver.  I've got a Bisley, a 4-5/8 BH, and a Contender in .41 and am on a quest for an Old Model.

If the cylinder locks up solid when the hammer is at full cock, and each chamber lines up with the bore when the cylinder is locked up, you are golden.

If not, you have been had.

There isn't much to know about Blackhawks, they are tanks that just keep on ticking. Only trouble I've ever had with one is I lost a rear sight blade once.

It is a big bro to my '77 Super Single Six, that is better fit and finished than my older 3 screw SS. I predict that you will be very happy with it, and ya gotta love that pre-warning barrel!
BTW, I also predict you will get more........its an 'affliction'....... :P .

Well so far I have only been able to clean it and admire it.

One of my hunting buddies has its twin. I sorta invited myself over to do some reloading for it. He has bullet molds and dies. That goes a ways towards the, why a .41? I'm a contrary person by nature so that goes into it as well.

One thing about revolvers is that it is possible to jam them. Did this with a Super Blackhawk shooting heavy lead bullet loads. What happens is that if they are not crimped heavily after a few shots the remaining bullets in the cylinder work their way forward and jam into the frame which stops cylinder rotation. I just pushed the bullets back in by hand and kept firing. From then on I put an adequate crimp on my reloads. In my opinion Blackhawks are one of the best buys currently available in single actions.

As far as affordability goes, I was pretty happy with what I brought home for the money. I'm going to end up about even by the time I get a good holster and belt for this gun. The SIG accessories will pay the bill on Ruger accesories, and the guns were about even. No doubt the dealer will make a buck as well.

The .41 is a fantastic cartridge.  Quite versatile if you reload for it too.  It was the same 6 1/2" BH in .41 that started my attraction to the cartridge.  No doubt you'll enjoy it. :) :)
