First Coyote with the new Savage .17HMR and
« on: March 26, 2006, 03:16:32 PM »
Well late this afternoon I decided to go out and do a little last minute calling with the new Foxpro. We have just bushhogged the back 75 acres, so it was a beautiful thing to just look over the rolling hills. I picked out a small fur tree to sit up against and set the Foxpro about 100 yards out with the wind blowing from left to right. With the hardwoods being on the left, I knew I might have a chance of getting a coyote to come out from that side and circle down wind of the Foxpro right in front of me. I started off with the "jackrabbit distress" and not 4 minutes into the sequence I saw movement to my left. Exactly where I hoped one would show up from. She was at about 120 yards and heading downwind between me and the Foxpro. I let her get to about 100 yards and barked. Now today I did something different than I usually do. I carried the new Savage .17HMR.  I put the crosshairs right on her front shoulder and squeezed the accutrigger. It was on then. She took off and made it about 30 yards and piled up. I was very impressed with the .17 and how it performed. But I took my time and placed the shot where I could get into the vitals and mess her up good. The Foxpro has turned out to be a great invesment for me.

Looks to me like the coyote didn't know the .17HMR wasn't supposed to kill her.......probably left her body armor at home!

Were you shooting the 17 grain hornady bullet?

I'm glad I just read your post, as I've been wanting to know how the 17HMR would do on yotes....Buddy told me I'd be a fool to try and shoot one with this gun, saying it just aint got it.....I had picked up the Marlin a couple of months ago with the fluted barrel, and its a shooter....

muzzleblast525. I am a firm believer in the .17 HRM on coyotes. But I will say this. You must put the bullet in the boiler room, period! All the talk about the .17hmr not being enough gun is usually said by somebody who has never taken a coyote with a .17hmr. I would stay with everything within 150yards and precise bullet placement. This should guarantee a kill shot. I was even using the 17grain Hornady V-MAX. It did the job. Now take that new Marlin out and go get em :D

After you have shot a dozen come back and tell us how many have run off.  I would say you are a lucky person.  Larry

Like I said in the previous reply. If its not under 150 yards and where I can put it in the boiler room, I wont take the shot. Anyways I usually take the Handi .243 with me. It is always BANG FLOP with that gun 8)

good job..a caller with a remote is a nice thing to have.makes a one person set a little easier.I have seen the .17hmr do it stuff on several coyotes.and it will drop em.Like you said, you have to take carefull aim to drop them.and the boiler room will do the trick.I have shot several with mine and a bunch of jackrabbits.works okay.the jacks really get spanked by that little bullet...
I just bought a 8mm remington magnum from a guy that bought it from the custom shop of remington then I guess he sent it off for more custom work and when he took it to the range decided the recoil was waaaaay to much for him.so,he sold it cheap.along with dies, brass and a bunch of swift 200 gr.bullets.dang those cases or long and big.I will try it on a coyote next season.that rifle and cartridge looks like it can do long range work.if it shoots as well as it looks those filthy coyotes will be in trouble.....

Kyote

I think you will love the 8mm rem mag. I had one and hunted with several seasons and a friend kept hounding me to sell it to him and so i did. One heck of a gun and caliber, Couldent tell much difference between it and the338 win. On the bench i was getting great groups,,, But it would knock my hat off every time. Good luck with your new toy, I know you will like it. :D ..........Joe..........

oso45-70,
I think I will like it also.I am going to put a leupold 4.5x14 vari xlll matte long range scope on her.am looking at the 1st load of 86 grains of Rl 22 under a barnes 180 triple shock bullet.looks like I will not have to try and sneak up on animals any more to ge with in range.he he he...I am hopeing she prints good on the 1st range session.as I think my hat will be flyin off to boot.for some reason "kicks like a mule"comes to mind...

I've used the .17 Vmax and wounded more than I've brought home.  Several people have said to switch to the 20 grain bullet.  All my shots have been within 130 yards, most within 50.  I've hit them direct from the front in the chest and they ran off.  I hit a bobcat at less than 40 yards and flipped it.  I ran off.  Hit a yote at 130 (the distance to the back of my property) and dropped it.  Go figure!!!!!   If I really want to bring them home, I take my .243
Good luck.
