Winchester M-64 Disassembly
« on: July 03, 2006, 07:00:05 AM »
I am attempting to disassemble by Win 64 (ser# 1981109) (made in 1951) for home cold blueing using a tutorial I found on the lever action forum . The tutorial is for a later M-94. There are some differences in both magazine tube removal and receiver disassembly. Can anyone direct me to a more specific set of instructions or walk me through the differences?
Here is the link to the tutorial mentioned above. http://www.castbullet.com/misc/tdown.htm
The differences I find so far are...
Entirely fifferent magazine system.
#3 screw is just a pin in my rifle.
I have removed #1 screw and the tang/hammer assemblt does not want to drop out of position. I`m not confident to do anything more than tap it lightly with a small hammer at this point unless someone can confirm that I am indeed in the right track where that is concerned. Hoping to get help. I have included a parts blow up link below. The pin you are talking of is the part #34. It is retained by the screw #35. These need to come out for the lever to be freed. The lower tang slides to the rear. perhaps the diagram will help.

I forgot the link and then the site went down. I've busy since but will put up the link now. It is a link to a 94 but the leaf spring version.. I'm not familiar with the 64, haven't taken one down in a long time.. Generallhy speaking if there's a horizontal pin thru the mag loop it will likely be retaining the outer magazine tube. I would advise the use of a material called KROIL for soaking and penetrating.. I've found it works better than WD40. Also the rather common 'Liquid Wrench' works very well, especially with rusted parts..

gunnut I do not see the link you mention and will be very happy to have it.
Meanwhile I have lesrned thay at this point my problem is that the leaf spring needs to be detached before the tang assembly can be removed. This mistake is the result of the tutorial I linked to and was using gives its example on a coil spring version never mentioning the differences mean different approaches to disassembly.
The take down in the link I posted shows the magazine being removed but the 64 has a different system. It looks to me like there is a pin through the tube bracket that will allow all to be removed from the barrel. Is that correct?
I really appreciate you help and my bet is that this is but the beginning and that more issues will follow as the project progresses. I will probably use seperate threads for each seperate issue.
In addition to being a hunting and rifle enthuiast I am also an amature photographer active in various photography forums. When I saw your avatar I  at first thought it was my own. I have an eagles head that i personally photographed here on Prince of Wales Island Alaska that is very similar to the one you use. I can share that with you in a PM. Thanks for your help. If your link is there please tell me how to access it. If it was forgotten please include it.
I am currently soaking the leafspring screw in WD-40 and when that is ready and removed I will be ready to proceed to the pin you refere to. Thanks again. Bobcat
