Why do you want to clean the spring and/or piston? Normally I would think no maintainance required unless replacing the spring / seal.

The springs are very strong. I dont think you can reassemble the gun without a compressor. I used a scissor jack and 2x4 screwed to the work bench-but wouldnt rec it--if things go wrong--they can get nasty in a hurry

The owners manual stresses not to over oil any part of the gun,oil collects dirt that may be the source of the problem.I have to watch myself not to over do it. D.P.

On the RWS web site it says that changing the spring and seal is very
simple "owner friendly".

 That RWS website is talking about the breech seal NOT about the piston seal.  You can get it apart without a spring compresser but you will probably damage something.  You will not get it back together without a compresser.  Marsh

I found a home built spring compressor at this site.
http://www.eddiecolwell.tzo.com/RWS-54.htm
It's for an RWS 54 but should work for an RWS 48.
