3030 load work up
« on: July 05, 2006, 03:38:23 AM »
Hi folks,
I have a handi 3030 with the williams receiver peep sight.  Last night I loaded up 12 rounds (150g hornady spire, H4895).  I have (3) groups of 4 each with my workup.  If I am doing this on one of my scoped rifles its quite easy to see if you have a good group.  My question is, do you guys have any tricks for iron sights?  ie, 25y or 50y?  It just seems that with the peep sights my "groups" are more of a "gathering"!  I just don't want to miss that the sweet spot load just because of the inherent lack of precision that you get with iron sights.  -thanks

I know exactly what you mean. That's why I scope all my rifles during load developement. After the final loads are found, some of the scopes come off.

I'm with Wally, I use a scope if I can for load work. An alternative that will help is to use a target aperture in the rear sight, the ½" disk with .050" hole will help with accuracy.

My little experience with load work seems to work best if I use a minimum of 10 three shot loads in ½gr increments, any less and you need to have a little luck finding the best load. With almost all of the loads I've worked up, ½gr up or down made a big difference in group size.

Another option is to use the ladder method, but perfect sighting and support is critical.

thanks guys...I had wondered about putting a scope on, I just dont have any kicking around, but maybe I will rob one from my .223 for the time being.  I was hoping there was a "down and dirty" trick without having to scope!
