Up to my....... in squirrels
« on: July 19, 2006, 04:50:11 AM »
How many of you still hunt squirrels?  When I lived in Southern Illinois as a kid and went squirrel hunting I was lucky to even see a couple.  Here in the Missouri Ozarks where I live now I have to kick them out of the way to get to my car and I have installed a ‘now serving number….” next to my bird feeder.  It seems very few people even bother with them around here any more.  They are really the only small game available any more because of the changes in land use.  Rabbit and quail habitat is almost nonexistent.  It is a shame that today’s kids do not have these game species to cut their teeth on.  Around here the first animal they  shoot is probably a deer.I enjoy hunting squirrels and they are probably my favorite wild game.  You can’t beat fried squirrel and gravy.  My problem is that as a kid I never killed enough of them to learn how to effectively skin them with the result that when I have them skinned they probably have more hair on them then before the skinning.  It is only fair that I get a few of them after all they ate all the apples off my tree, plus the walnuts, various garden vegetables and of course emptied the bird feeder.  I usually confine my hunting to the colder months, as during the summer the woods are full of copperheads and ticks.  Of the two I prefer the copperheads as they usually go out of their way not to bite you.

I've been hunting squiresl for about 40 years now. I still love to hunt them and prefer a good .22 rifle for the task. I agree, ain't nothing better than some squirresl cooked up good and proper!

You need to bring him to the Missouri Ozarks.  We have thousands of acres of the Mark Twain National Forest that are open to public hunting.  Even my fat old ½ lab gets to tree a couple on our daily walk to the creek to let her cool off with a swim.  My only hope is that she doesn’t jump a deer, as then I don’t see her for a while.  She does always come back with a grin on her face, even though she knows she is going to get a bad dog.  What really confuses her is the armadillos that are moving into the area in large numbers.  But being a smart old dog she will probably be hitting me up for a can opener soon. ::)
