Which rangefinder?
« on: June 05, 2006, 07:38:59 AM »
Hi everyone,

I'm about to buy a rangefinder, but there are so many on the market that I don't know which to buy. I don't mind spending what it takes for a nice one, but I also don't want to waste money either.

I don't varmint hunt, and I doubt that I'll ever shoot much past 300 yards, but it is nice to know how far away that tree is on the other side of the canyon.

What seem to be the better units on the market?

I bought the bushnell 1500 elite for $389.  The optical features are what really impressed me.  Feels solid and the eye relief and objective are just great compared to even the Leica.

Now, the down side (sort of).  The thing was pretty impressive but would not range over 1000 yards consistently.  It worked great on most anything like trees out to 800 yards, but that's not what its potential is supposed to be so I sent it to bushnell service department.  They had it ten days and sent it back last night.  I took it out by our airport and got readings out to 1596 yards on water towers on the opposite side of the field.  I was absolutely amazed.  It gives instant readings on anything under 1000 yards.   It was worth the two week repair. I would buy that one and check it out carefully when you get it home.  If it's not up to speck, it's definitely worth the time to make them fix it up.  I imagine that mine was just a fluke as I bought it like one week after they hit the market last fall.

Also for just some info.  We have had a high return rate due to defects on the Elite 1500.  Hopefully Bushnell has figured the problem out and the returns go down.  Another 2 that are very nice is the Nikon Monarch Gold 1200 and the Nikon Monarch 800.  Excellent rangefinders also.

Thanks, that's even better information. Once is a bad unit, twice is a pattern ...

The Leopold has a feature called inclineometer, it takes elevation differances and adds or subtracts as approperate to give you the aiming range.  This is a good feature if you hunt in wide open country, where the didtances can be long, over rough terrain.  Like where I usually hunt in the mountains above treeline.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My friend and I are also in the market for Range Finders. Does anyone know anything about the Bushnell Yardage Pro 800?

Thanks, CDA
