Best .22 blanks for caplock ignition?
« on: April 20, 2007, 12:19:08 PM »
I'm looking to get some .22 blanks for a caplock ignition. What makes the best fire -- CCI or Fiocchi short blanks with smokeless or Winchester black powder short blanks?

Thanks!

if they work, .22 powernailgun blanks might be the best choice, as they are cheap and way easier to get. They are also crimped rather than having a paper wad out front, so there is nothing to get stuck in the flash hole.

I took some of the hotter ones (#4) out back one night in a .22 ruger revolver and fired them. I saw flame. I don't have any regular .22 blanks to compare them to, so I have no idea if they are good or bad.

This was talked about here briefly last year, but no one ever reported back as to actually trying them.

Preacher, if you are set up to use them, wanna try them and let us all know ? Most hardware stores seem to carry them (Ace usually, Home Depot and Lowes  for sure).

Good call on the paper wad. I hadn't thought about that problem.

Are you talking about the blank-powered nail drivers that you hit in the back with a hammer? I've seen them before at Sears. Never used one, though

I'll see what Lowes has and let you know what it does as soon as I get my "testing platform."

Yup, that's what I'm talking about. There was discussion last year about them , but a far as I know , no one has actually tried them.

That's why I threw some in a 22 revolver.

I saw flame... I guess that is what you want for ignition. They are cheap and readily available enough that they should be looked into.

I found that Nail driver blanks work as well as the Winchester black powder blanks.  The large diameter breeches need to be primed first.  I like them because they eject when fired  and this makes it easy to service the vent and load again without removing the nipple.   Dom

Does that mean that you pour powder down the vent first?

Dominick, I sent you an e-mail. I tried to PM you, but it says "Bad Gateway," and will not work.

 ;D ;D ;D Got it!

I picked up 2 boxes of Remington No. 4 nail driver blanks today at Lowes. They are $4.95 per box of 100.

They had No. 5's also, but they are .27 caliber and are loaded on plastic strips.

I tried the nail gun blanks once, the heads blew off leaving the blank casing stuck in the vent. The blanks were not a tight fit in the vent.

How was the hole made for the blank just a drilled out hole with a chambering reamer.  I if you do not chamber the edge where the rim rest the sharp edge will cut and blow the heads right off.

DD, The vent is just a straight hole near .22 case diameter with the blank cartridge rim sitting on top. Have shot many boxes of regular .22 blanks over the years without a failure.  The nail gun blanks appear to be hotter than standard .22 blanks and also are longer, which gives them more surface area to grip the vent when expanded. The nose of the hammer is tapered to a slot screwdriver configuration, relieved in the center so it will strike the rim of the blank on both sides. The hammer is designed to offer minimun resistance to the blank so the blank will eject without blowing off or otherwise damaging the hammer.  The blank will eject itself when fired without a load in the barrel.  Max

If you have been using a shorter case (.22 blank) it could be that there is a slight enlargement of the vent at the end of the case.  When you use the longer nail gun cases the mouth of the case may expand into the enlargement causing the extra pressure to blow off the head of the case.  Just a thought.

If the #4's are too hot, they make a 3, 2, and 1
