MARLIN 95 COWBOY - MARBLE TANG?
« on: June 29, 2006, 04:03:37 PM »
I'm getting 1895 Cowboy in 45-70.It has a Marble tang sight on it.I use open sights on every thing I own. I've never used one of these before is there any good points or bad points about these.I was thinking of getting a pare of shooting gloves with extra pating for the web of the hand.Cableas has a nice pare of handgun gloves. Thanks for the info.

If you have the Cowboy 45-70 let me know what you think about the gun.

I can't comment on that model rifle, but the tang sight is a peep sight of course.
Usually, you will be able to shoot tighter groups with a peep
rear sight, as compared to open sights.
I have used three Marlin Guide Guns in .45-70.( Much shorter barrels )
Two of them shoot very well, and the third one I have not had
time to check out fully yet. I suspect the rifle will do very well with
loads that it likes though.

I have had the rifle you are talking about for over a year now and it is not for sale. I shoot a hard cast 405 gr flat nose in it a 1750fps. Whew!!!! from the bench but, it will take anything on this continient. I ordered a Marble's tang sight for it and played with it a while but, my experience with it is; You have to cock your wrist at an odd angle to get around it and this causes the rifle to really work on me under recoil. Plus the sight bites the base of my thumb when I try a tighter grip. If not the rifle pounds my cheek. Solution, was I took the thing off, put it back in the box it came in, and put a reciever (peep) sight on it, with a ramp front sight with a white stripe in it. This is a perfect solution for my old eyes. I have the same setup on a model 92 and model 94. Oops! This is a Marlin forum. ;D

Dee,
I know you are unsatisfied with that Marble's sight.  Don't blame you as it is mostly junk.  Just so happens that I collect junk.  Would you want to sell it?

Naw........ My boys may want to fight over it when I get too old to care. And there is always a chance I might want to play with it again. As for junk. I don't collect it. I store it for future generations. ;D

Maybe you will move.  That will cure you of collecting or storing.

I've already solved that problem. I bought a covered trailer and anything I'm not sure about I throw it in there. If I change my mind later and it's not laying on top. I just buy another one. Downside? There maybe multiple examples of one item that I didn't quite hit it off with. Sometimes I become confused and go back again. Anyway the trailer is effective in the moving process. ;)

Dave,
I have the same gun.  It is my favorite rifle, and I have many.  I have a Marbles tange sight on mine and found that my groups improved quite a bit.  My eyes are starting to age and I have a bit of trouble making out the target and sights.  The tange made that much easier for me.  You will have to change your grip, but I do not find it difficult to adjust too.  Good luck, you will love the rifle.
