San Diego Cannons (with Pics)
« on: June 29, 2006, 10:13:33 AM »
I took my grandson down to the San Diego Maritime Museum, (I figured Boise doesn't have one a THEM! )and found these.

This is from the HMS SUPRISE The cannon is neat. it has a "pan" cast  into the top of the breech area  so when it fires it is more impressive (Remember, the whole thing is/was a movie set, They say it will take YEARS to get her back to  original sailing condition)(THIS CANNON IS A FAKE!!  >:( It is made of fiberglass! (I'm broken hearted))

There was also was a pair of these civil war vets on the deck of the BERKLEY (She's a double end ferry so I can't tell you if the were for'ard or aft) they are made of bronze but look as if they were brass plated (See following photo)

This plate is attached to one napolean's carriage

Note the neat Stainless steel vent liner and the pattern of the plating

I hope to be able to go aboard the suprise soon (when my hip improves or falls off   whichever comes first) and talk to the gunner , assuming they have someone who knows about them.
If anyone wants further pictures of features let me know.(like I need an excuse to go back)

Well, I Did not see them close enough! I am informed that the first cannon in the above post is FIBERGLASS! (But it's supposed to be operable. with fiberglass balls , I guess)) Sorry guys, It never occured to me to caress it! My grandson placed the powder can and as my hip hurts I never took those few steps. But it sure is pretty!
I never did trust them hollywood fellers! :D

By the by: One of the anchors is fiberglass too & in one scene they lowered it and it floated! WHOOPS!

Santa Dave,

Thanks for the photos. Looks like you had a fun trip. Next time you are in Boise take your Grandson to the capital. There are supposed to be three cannons there too. I have never personally seen them but have seen documention of them.
If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

He lives there. Maybe I'll ask him to take some pictures for me.
