What grows in S. FL, zone 10?
« on: July 17, 2006, 10:53:55 AM »
Does anything worthwhile grow in Southwest Florida? This is zone 10. I would like to plant various fruit trees, nut trees and grasses or shrubs for deer.

Thanks

Spring & summer = Sorghum, rape, bush beans, turnip & corn. In the fall (October/November) try rye grass. Some clovers will do OK but I'm not sure which varieties. Honeysuckle is a magnet to S Florida deer but be careful it does not take over. Probably the best thing you could do is to lime and fertilize native species such as Palmetto and acorn producing oaks that are already there.

Clover varieties that grow well almost anywhere would be Ladino, Red & Alsike. You could even throw some Birdsfoot Trefoil in there. This stuff grows almost anywhere. And the nice thing about this mix (or any clover mix) is that it's a perennial. All you will have to do is mow it a couple times during the season and add some 6-24-24 to it in the spring. You should be all set.

Up north, we can get those plots coming back year after year. They have been known to last at least 5 season, and even up to 10 seasons as long as they are properly maintained.

Hope that helps with the clover idea. Clover is a great food plot that deer love, and it will be visited all season long.
