Rossi R357S rifle
« on: August 22, 2010, 04:19:44 AM »
I have a Rossi R357S, which is a stainless steel, 357 Magnum, break-open, single shot rifle. Does anyone know if this particular rifle was offered in any other calibers? Thanks.

I believe there was a 44 mag version also. I have one of the 357s also it's a great brush gun taken many deer with it. It wears a Simmons 4X32 shotgun scope and shoots about 1 1/2" at 100 yards with the Hornady LE rounds.

I had mine rechambered to .357 Maximum by David White in OK and am still working on loads for it. I swage my own bullets and have had decent success with a 170 gn and 180 gn HP. I'll see how they work out, but I am having trouble trying to find a good, inexpensive, variable scope for it, as I outlived my eyes, and iron sights and red dots don't work very well.

I also have a R357S which is a handy little rifle and very accurate.  I have taken numerous wild goats as well as a Blackbuck antelope with mine.  I had the barrel shortened to 16.5", added a Williams peep sight, and refinished the stock.  I'm very happy with the outcome.  :)

Try a Nikon Pro Staff 2X7X32. They are right around $100 at dick"s sporting goods

Guys,
It looks and sounds as if I'm not the only one that has discovered a sleeper. They are neat, little rifles, aren't they!
Ganjiro-your rifle is gorgeous. What did you refinish that stock with? I thought the wood under the black paint would be something el-cheapo, but yours came out beautiful. I'll have to thing about shortening my barrel, as, having converted it to .357 Maximum, I don't want to take away from the cartridge's potential by cutting the barrel back.
45-70.gov-let's see a picture of your creation-with and without suppressor. That would give me a look at 2 shortened versions.
I found a really nice scope here on this forum for a really nice price. It's a Sightron II, 1.5x6x42, in like-new condition. Of course, just after I received it, I tore the rotator cuff in my left shoulder again for the 3rd time, so I have been a little 'short handed' for the last month, and haven't gotten to sight it in yet. I'm hoping to get out of here shortly and bring everything into alignment. I'll try to post a picture here shortly. I have ordered the .22/.410 SS combination, which is the only SS available from Rossi right now that I'm aware of. I may convert the .410 barrel to .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum, or .32-20, all of which should be interesting. I have to get it first and then see how I feel about it. I have been wanting a single-shot .22, as I have a collector-grade Remington #4 Rolling Block .22 that I just can't bring myself to shoot on a regular basis. I'm going to put it on Gunbroker to remove the temptation.

The wood underneath the paint was light color like birch.  I had some Watco oil in dark walnut, and red oak on hand so I mixed the two to try and get a color resembling the old Winchester stock color.  After letting the Watco sink in and cure I applied several coats of Tru-Oil.  The fore-end especially had some nice fiddle back grains.

I agree shortening the barrel not a good idea for the .357 Maximum.  Before I shortened my barrel I did some research and determined that 16" was the ideal length for the .357 Magnum as far as burning up all the powder in that case size.  Shorter would be illegal and have excess muzzle flash, and longer would be no advantage velocity wise.
