Sav 110 On-Off Muzzle Brake
« on: July 08, 2006, 10:16:46 AM »
A friend just bought a used 110 in 300 WinMag.  It has the muzzle brake that can be turned OFF.   How do you rotate the brake??? ???   It only has a 20" barrel on it and I think allot of unburnt powder is binding up the works.  I soaked it in diesel over night and it still won't turn.   Is there a lock or special tool??

Hey,
I held one of these the other day for the first time ever.  I looked the muzzle break over and it seemed to me like it was held open or shut by a ball bearing or some other small hidden fitting.  I would have thought that soaking it in diesel over night would have freed it up.  As much as I hate to say it.....  It may be time to use that tool in everyones box......  Excessive force.  I'm interested in how this works out for you.  When he finds out would you ask your friend to see if he finds much difference with noise and recoil with the break open or closed?  I've been thinking about getting one and I want to know if that break actually makes much difference.

They should move easily, with very little force. You might try soaking in Kroil for a few days. The do unscrew from the barrel by putting 1/8th pins through it and turning with a wrench or similar. There is a little square piece and spring in the front that engages a notch in the outer sleeve. And yes, they do work. Not as well as some others like a Vias or Score High, but it is very noticable.

My brother has a 116 in .338 mag with the adjustable brake.  They turn by hand, and work well.  As mentioned, try Kroil.

hey azmike,
Does your brother notice significant reduction of noise and recoil with the break open vs being closed.  Does it make any difference in accuracy with your brothers rifle?  I'm interested in anything you can tell us about how the muzzle break affects things.

There is less recoil and more noise when it is open. The point of impact changes, more or less, depending on caliber and load. This is not even close to the top brake designs in efficiency, but it does work enough to be very noticable.
