Bullets for hog hunting, 375H&H?
« on: October 27, 2005, 07:22:29 AM »
What's a good hog hunting bullet for 375H&H? The hogs are up to about 200 pounds.

I know, I know. You're probably thinking "what's with the cannon?"  Well, it's what I have, so that's what I use.

I dont think you are crazy as i had one and used one to kill at least 6 hogs one was 349 lbs and ya know of the 6 only 2 dropped in there tracks, yes it may be to much gun but it got the job done  i was just experimenting with different calibers and all  but i used  Reminton factory 270 gr softpoints got good penetration good blood trail and made for a good recovery  i hit the big hog square in the shoulders took out the lungs and he still went 50 yards through thick brush luckily  i had a great blood trail i reealize you are talking 4,000 fpe at the muzzle hogs at times can with stand a tremendous amount of energy main thing is to put it in the vitals  a head /nexk shot is certain death the vitals are different on a hog than deer  so i shoot forward of the leg, try not to hit behind the leg as you would a deer as that is not where the lungs and heart are  hope i have helped

Thanks for the tips and the benefit of your experience. It's good to know about the blood trail. A lot of bullets don't give a good blood trail on hogs.

Try 73.5 gr. of H4895 behind a 235 gr. Barnes XLC.  Flat shooting and accurate with more than enough power for the biggest Wild Boar you could run across.  Lawdog

Almost any bullet made for the 375 will work fine. I would look at the balistictip if I needed longer range.

Questor, I don't think anyone need to apologize for using too much gun!  The .375 H&H is a great classic.  I have a Russian boar hunt coming up this fall and am seriously considering my Ruger #1 in 375.  I think any of the 270-300 grainers will be fine.  I am leaning towards a round nose, just because the boars I am likely to see are in the 200-300lb. range, (not the huge size hogs some of you guys get), and think a littler earlier expansion might not be bad in this caliber.

Use any weight bullet and just shoot near it and the explosion should take care of 'em!  ;)

Good Lord! Did he say 375 Holland and Holland? He must have talked to a gun magazine writer. I use a 52 grain match hollow point in an M4A2 and a 3030 Winchester. However, I will admit to using a 4570 in the brush when hunting by myself sometimes but, not often. Too heavy. ;)

I thought a 223 was enough with a 3030 for the really dangerous ones.
