mauser feeding
« on: July 29, 2006, 09:32:26 AM »
I have a sporterized mauser k98 that i bought this week. it is chambered in .30-06.  the magazine follower does not push up correctly...or something like that, because the cartridges get stuck in there and the bolt slide over them, not picking them up.

any ideas?

I also posted this in the surplus forum.

Is the magazine spring installed correctly? See the diagram at the link..

I think I misunderstood.. The cartridges aren't diving they are jamming as they attempt to exit the magazine and enter the chamber? The 30-06 and the 243 are very close to the same diameter. Thus the only major difference is the length and bore diameter. The later is irrelavent to the feeding problem. If the problem is indeed a binding then the feed rails in the action will need to be opened to allow the longer case of the 30-06 to release from the rails sooner.

used my .243 dies to push the bullets in the .30-06 cartridges about 1/4" deeper into the cases. they fed right through the mauser.

the whole problem was, indeed, length.

thanks guys!
