Nice Deer Drillingman...

Do you often hunt with your scope off the drilling?  How do you carry the scope?

thanks

Doug, i many times carry my drilling without the scope mounted, but i rarely sit for big game without the scope snapped on it.  It really all depends on what i'm hunting and what the terrain is.

When walking these days, i carry the scope in a pocket on my coat.  When i lived in Alaska, many times i carried the scope in a side pocket in my pack, but my eyes were younger then, and the scope wasn't needed as much.  lol

Usually don't carry a camera, but a mate had one along for the walk.  This pair are now in the freezer.

Thanks Doug,

I used the Sauer 7x57, 16g, 16g (22wmr insert).

Shot a deer the same size 3 weeks earlier in this area with my .222 as I was a bit tentative in using the drilling and I had never shot a deer before so didn't know exactly what to expect.  Now have enough brass and reloaded the 7x57 with 120grain v max, these are shooting much better than the 140g round nose, which dropped 19" over 330yards.

The drilling has had a fair amount of use over the last couple of months, taking a couple of pigs, fox's, rabbits and a cat.  One area it dose have problems with though, is with spotlighting out of the ute cab.  Fabricated a quick detach magnetic torch mount which has been used to shoot fox's on a friends farm.  Having the range of calibres is a bonus around sheds/house, scrubby gullys and open paddocks.

Cheers,
James

James, that is great.  the Sauer 16x16/7x57R is my first drilling and one of my sentimental favorites.

For night hunting I mount my lights on the scope, there are several different systems available for mounting the lights to the scope.  I have not found a way to mount a light to a drilling barrel.

I ended up taking the Merkel 12x12/9.3x74R.  After stalking all morning I  I ended up taking this cow elk in the afternoon.  We guested she weighted 500 lbs.

Thanks Robert,

I really like the 9.3x74r it was a great recommendation you made.

I am having just steaks and ground meat made.  My wife is freaking out about not having enough freezer space, to which I responded I guess we need another deep freezer.......

Here is a picture of a nice boar I took with my Valmet 412, using the 30-06 double barrels. Winchester Old style Silver Tips did the job. (180 gr) I have killed several deer with this rifle but lack any pictures
