Varget??
« on: July 12, 2006, 03:23:04 PM »
Is varget a dirty powder? I bought an unopened jug a few weeks ago.I've loaded it in several rifles and when cleaning them ,they seem to be REALLY dirty. Patches come out black for several patches. I've used wipeout and shooters choice and Hoppes copper cleaners. With the same or similar results. ???

i dunno...the 4895 i used seemed about the same as varget...maybe a little cleaner. to be honest, both my .204 and .243 shoot so well with varget, i just don't mind the cleaning.  8)

I haven't found Varget to be dirty.  I have found that a variety of powders burn dirty if the pressure is too low.

Varget burns very clean in my .223.I agree with  Grumulkin that alot
of the powders I've tried seem to burn dirty if loaded on the lighter side
of the data range.I also just tried Benchmark today and think it is my
new favorite powder for the .223,the hotter loads shot really well.

pressures do NOT appear to be low  from the looks of the primer. I loaded 5 each 33.5,34.5,35.5 and 36.5 grains under a 55 grain ww bulk bullet Another batch ,same powder/primer with the sierra 52 hp match.Patching between groups

You must try benchmark,it is proving to be an excellent powder
for the .223.Excellent accuracy so far,I'll be playing with this
one for a while. Also is a very short extruded powder,so should
meter very well out of a measure if you use that method. Also
seems to hold accuracy in a wide temp. range.

Hodgdon Benchmark

I was just at the range yesterday morning trying out Benchmark in my .223 Rem with 52 grain Hornady A-Max's.  It shot pretty good; but, BL-C(2) and 50 grain V-Max's group tighter.  Of course, I haven't tried Benchmark with any other bullets yet.  I was impressed when my first 3 shots w/ Benchmark were all touching.  The next 2 strayed a little farther.  I only shot 3 5-shot groups w/ Benchmark.  They ranged from 1" to 1.4".

Hodgdon states that Varget is one of their cleanest burning powder.

I am beginning to think my "dirty powder" problem MAY be a lube problem in the one gun .I'm still trying to figure out what's going on with the 22-250!

Varget seems to leave a darker colored fouling which makes it seem dirty. However, I haven't found it to require any more patches to remove than other powders.

Among the Hodgdon powders that I have been using, BLC 2 seems to the the dirtiest. Varget is not as clean a H4350 or H4831.
